Martin County Council Approves Appointment of New County Attorney Despite Dissent
- Meeting Overview:
The Martin County Council meeting on October 21, 2025, was marked by the appointment of Elise Elder as the new county attorney, amid a blend of support and dissent. The council also navigated several other issues, including safety concerns in local communities, environmental conservation efforts, and infrastructure projects.
The most prominent topic at the meeting was the appointment of Elise Elder as the county attorney. The selection process, initiated in May, was thorough, involving a committee consisting of the county clerk, sheriff, and a former county attorney. The committee unanimously recommended Elder after narrowing down the candidates. Her qualifications and experience in both public and private sectors received high praise, with one commissioner highlighting her as the “complete package” for the role.
Despite the strong support from the selection committee and several council members, the appointment was not without controversy. A commissioner opposed Elder’s appointment, citing unprofessional conduct during a past trial involving a county employee. This individual alleged that Elder had been disruptive in the courtroom, which they felt demonstrated a lack of professionalism. However, the majority of the council expressed confidence in Elder’s ability to provide excellent legal counsel, emphasizing the rigorous selection process she underwent. The motion to appoint Elder was passed with a vote of 4 to 1.
Another topic was the discussion surrounding the Meadowrun Homeowners Association’s request for a reconsideration of a decision involving a gate. Residents expressed concerns about safety and emergency vehicle access, advocating for a back gate to alleviate traffic issues. The council acknowledged the procedural issues raised and agreed to allow a balanced presentation of arguments from both sides, leading to a motion for reconsideration that passed unanimously.
In addition to the attorney appointment and community safety concerns, the council addressed several infrastructure and conservation projects. A public-private partnership (P3) proposal for a new public facility was approved, which included plans for a backup dispatch center and medical offices. The council also discussed the design and adoption of an official Martin County flag, ultimately deciding on a design featuring a sailfish.
The Environmental Lands Oversight Committee presented several properties for potential acquisition, emphasizing their ecological significance and the role they could play in regional conservation efforts. The council expressed a strong interest in collaborating with state programs to protect these lands.
Infrastructure improvements were also on the agenda, with approvals for various projects, including enhancements to the Sheriff’s Office training facility and the expansion of the supervisor of elections’ office. These projects underscore the council’s focus on improving public safety and ensuring efficient election operations.
The meeting concluded with a focus on maintaining open communication with local municipalities, as the council expressed a willingness to engage in discussions with neighboring entities to address shared concerns.
