Matawan-Aberdeen School Board Reviews Redistricting Plans and Celebrates Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Matawan-Aberdeen School Board meeting, discussions centered around potential redistricting to address enrollment changes and student achievements, alongside educational initiatives aimed at fostering a love for learning. The board also acknowledged the community’s role in these processes and emphasized the importance of data-informed decision-making to enhance educational outcomes.
The potential redistricting for the 2026-2027 school year was a focus. The board clarified that no decisions have been made yet. They plan to hire a demographer to analyze student residency data and explore boundary adjustments that might be necessary to balance enrollment across the district’s schools. A community forum, scheduled for the end of the month, will provide a platform for public input. The board emphasized that the findings and recommendations will be shared with the community and subject to board approval in late February.
Enrollment trends have shown an increase of 108 new students since August, bringing the total to 3,848. This growth has prompted considerations for redistricting, particularly as the district aims to maintain equitable access to education, prevent overcrowding, and optimize transportation efficiency. The superintendent highlighted the recent opening of a new classroom in Strathmore kindergarten to accommodate late registrations, which helped prevent class sizes from reaching 25 students.
In addition to redistricting discussions, the board reviewed student performance data, particularly in language arts and mathematics. Data analysis revealed that the district performance in English Language Arts (ELA) surpassed state scores across all levels, while mathematics scores showed mixed results. The board acknowledged the need to enhance instructional methods to address these discrepancies, particularly in early grades where growth has been less pronounced. Initiatives such as the “Starbooks” reading program, which encourages students to explore various genres in a café-like setting, were highlighted as effective strategies for engaging students and improving literacy.
The “Starbooks” initiative, presented by a language arts teacher, transformed reading into an enjoyable experience by mimicking a coffee shop atmosphere where students sampled books as though they were tasting different coffee flavors. This initiative aimed to foster a love for reading among students, many of whom typically prefer other activities. The program received positive feedback from students and demonstrated success in introducing them to new authors and genres.
Efforts to improve attendance were also discussed, with a focus on reducing chronic absenteeism. The district reported a 1% improvement in attendance compared to the previous year, with certain grades showing a 2% increase. These improvements are expected to correlate with better academic performance.
Safety and facility improvements were addressed, with discussions on the condition of school buildings and the need for renovations. A finance and facilities committee has been established to address budget constraints and plan for a referendum in November 2027 to fund repairs, including roof replacements and addressing water damage. The board acknowledged recent improvements, such as updated restrooms and new flooring, but emphasized the importance of addressing issues like roofing to protect against future damage.
The meeting also highlighted student achievements and community engagement. The high school football team was noted for reaching the playoffs, and the marching band received commendations for their performance improvements. The student government hosted a roundtable with club representatives, fostering collaboration and planning for future activities.
In administrative matters, the board discussed policy language related to dyslexia screening and the responsibilities of students and teachers concerning lost textbooks. Clarifications were sought to ensure that policies accurately reflect roles and responsibilities. The board also addressed a student journalism policy.
The board expressed appreciation for Superintendent Nelyda Perez’s contract extension to 2030. Retirement announcements, such as that of Mr. Shu after 29 years, were acknowledged, with gratitude for his contributions as a teacher and coach.
