Mayer City Council Discusses Fire Department’s Future Plans and Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
In its latest meeting, the Mayer City Council delved into the fire department’s annual report and discussed plans for future community events and equipment upgrades. The council also addressed the potential donation of surplus fire hoses and the adoption of an ordinance amending the fee schedule.
The meeting’s focal point was the presentation by Fire Chief Andy Metsold, who provided an overview of the fire department’s activities in 2025. The department responded to 127 calls, and its efforts included medical emergencies, fires, and mutual aid calls. Notably, the department recently acquired a Lucas automated CPR machine and celebrated its 125th anniversary. Looking forward, there are plans to host another street dance celebration in conjunction with the Mayor Rising Community Festival, following positive feedback from the previous year’s event. Additionally, the department is preparing for the eventual replacement of a fire engine, slated for 2030, by exploring specifications and potential grants due to extended build times from manufacturers.
The council also considered a request from a nonprofit organization, Akala Family Foundation, to donate surplus fire hoses for use in Guatemala. The council discussed the protocol for declaring the equipment as surplus and eligible for donation, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the equipment is put to good use where it is needed.
Furthermore, the council adopted Ordinance 252, amending the fee schedule to reflect an increased Minnesota water testing fee. This fee, imposed by the state, will rise from 81 cents to $1.27 per month due to increased testing costs. The council noted that this fee is a pass-through cost to residents.
