Mayer City Council Opts for Hartford Insurance Amid New State Paid Leave Requirements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Mayer City Council approved transitioning their group benefits from Lincoln Life to Hartford, aligning with Minnesota’s new paid leave law set to take effect in 2026. The Council also approved the hiring of Josh Harrow as a public works utility operator.
The council’s decision to switch to Hartford was driven by the need to comply with Minnesota’s paid leave law, which mandates a short-term disability-like coverage for nearly all Minnesota employees starting January 1, 2026. The law requires employers to either participate in the state program or select a comparable private plan. The Council evaluated two quotes from Hartford and Principal, with Hartford offering the more cost-effective option. Hartford’s aggressive pricing strategy, particularly for small groups, made it the preferred choice, offering a lower overall annual premium than the state program and the current provider.
The new Hartford plan will reduce the financial burden on employees, as the employer’s contribution remains at a statutory minimum, while the employee portion decreases compared to the state plan. The Council highlighted the flexibility of the Hartford plan, which includes a two-year rate guarantee and the option to change providers if rates become unfavorable.
Additionally, the Council approved the hiring of Josh Harrow as a public works utility operator. Harrow, currently a parks operator in Chanhassen, was selected from 15 applicants after a thorough interview process. He brings five years of experience in parks and streets, making him a valuable addition to the city’s team. Harrow’s hire is set to begin on November 24, 2025, at step three of the utility operator pay scale.
