- Meeting Overview:
The recent Oakland Borough Council meeting was marked by a detailed address from the mayor, who reviewed the past year’s achievements and outlined plans for the future. Key highlights included the prevention of a recycling center dump, infrastructure improvements, and the introduction of new community programs. The meeting also saw the swearing-in of new police officers, reaffirmations of council members, and the appointment of various borough professionals.
The mayor’s year-in-review address was a focal point of the meeting, detailing several accomplishments. Notably, the collaborative effort with Bergen County and the environmental commission successfully prevented the establishment of a recycling center dump in Oakland, which was deemed potentially harmful to residents.
Infrastructure improvements were another major theme in the mayor’s address. The completion of PFOS treatment for three wells was highlighted, bringing the borough’s drinking water into compliance with state standards. The mayor also celebrated the refurbishment of sidewalks near the lake and the addition of new pickleball courts, which have enhanced community facilities. The paving of 5.7 miles of roads, involving coordination with public service entities, was emphasized for its role in upgrading essential borough infrastructure.
The ongoing construction of the Patriots Way Bridge was another point of interest, with the mayor providing assurances that the project is progressing well despite winter conditions. Additionally, the introduction of a veterans banner program in collaboration with the American Legion was announced, aimed at honoring local veterans along Route 202 in the downtown business district.
In terms of telecommunications, a noteworthy development was the successful negotiation for FiOS service in The Reserve, offering residents more options than the previous single cable provider. The completion of Bush Plaza was mentioned as a critical aspect of downtown redevelopment, with plans for a new McDonald’s set to commence construction in early spring.
Looking to the future, the mayor outlined several goals, including beautification efforts for the Van Allen house and enhanced landscaping around the town. New Christmas decorations for the downtown area and plans for sidewalk extensions to improve pedestrian access from the high school were also mentioned. A forward planning committee is to be established to strategize Oakland’s growth over the next five to ten years.
The meeting also included personnel changes within the police department. Peter Marage and James Vardo were sworn in as new police officers, each affirming their commitment to uphold the Constitutions of both the United States and New Jersey. Their appointments, effective January 8, were celebrated by the council and attendees.
Newly elected officials were also sworn in during the meeting. Councilman Steven Saliani and Councilwoman Caroline Rose took their oaths of office, expressing gratitude to the community and their families. Saliani emphasized the privilege of serving Oakland’s citizens, while Rose committed to maintaining the borough as a safe and beautiful community.
The council moved on to approve the appointment of borough professionals recommended by the administration committee. This included Matthew Gilson as borough attorney and Kathy Ston as labor attorney, among others.
Further, mayoral appointments were made to various boards and commissions. The Environmental Commission, Board of Health, Zoning Board of Adjustment, and Communications Commission saw reappointments, while new appointments were made to the planning board and library, including Marilyn Vone for a term extending to 2029. These appointments were seen as crucial for maintaining continuity and advancing the borough’s strategic interests.
Public comments during the meeting brought issues of community participation and municipal court procedures to the fore. One resident expressed gratitude for volunteer efforts, highlighting the community’s appreciation for those who dedicate their time to organizing local events. Another resident raised concerns over the handling of court-ordered documents, reflecting frustrations with the municipal court’s processes.
The meeting concluded with routine approvals, including the minutes from previous meetings and a temporary budget. A special announcement regarding a raffle license for the PTO high school aimed at supporting educational programs was also made. The council’s business concluded with a benediction from Pastor Russell Stammer, who encouraged unity and dignity within the community.
