Medford School Committee Advances HVAC Project, Approves Option 1 for Roberts Elementary
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Medford School Committee meeting, a major highlight was the advancement of the Roberts Elementary School HVAC project, with the committee approving Option 1 for the heating and cooling system upgrade. The meeting also covered updates on the Medford High School building project, adjustments to the educational plan, and an updated student handbook policy.
The Roberts Elementary School HVAC project was a focal point of the committee’s discussions. The committee members deliberated on three proposed options for the new heating and cooling systems, each with its own advantages and drawbacks. Option 1, which was ultimately approved, involves the air-to-water source heat pump system. This option was favored for its simplicity and the ability to operate across the building. It aims to minimize disruptions to the educational areas by focusing work primarily on the mechanical systems located on the roof. The air-to-water heat pump is known for its energy efficiency, albeit slightly less efficient than geothermal systems but more cost-effective and simpler to implement.
The discussion also covered the fiscal aspects of the HVAC project. The engineering team outlined the financial implications, including the need for roof replacement and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), estimated at $500,000.
In addition to the HVAC project, the committee addressed updates on the Medford High School building project. Member Graham, chair of the building committee, shared progress on the selection of a preferred option for the comprehensive school building project. The chosen option, C 2.2A, includes additions while preserving existing facilities like the gym and pool. This option aligns with the educational plan and avoids previous deed restrictions. The committee was informed of an upcoming meeting to officially approve the preliminary design phase report submission to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and authorize a request for qualifications to secure a construction manager.
The meeting also brought attention to proposed changes in the educational plan, particularly regarding spatial configurations within schools. Adjustments included reducing space in the robotics area and repurposing some facilities to better align with curriculum delivery and space efficiency. The committee emphasized the importance of creating flexible, adaptable spaces to meet both current and future educational needs. The integration of solar energy and the management of HVAC systems with existing infrastructure were also part of the discussions.
Another topic was the approval of an updated Medford Public Schools handbook. The revised handbook includes a new policy stating that recess will not be withheld as a disciplinary measure. Additionally, the handbook now requires principal approval for any loss of recess due to disciplinary issues. The committee also updated the policy on student travel and addressed amendments to the guidance on the use of generative AI in educational settings, prohibiting reliance on AI tools for grading or feedback on student work.
Finally, the committee discussed the superintendent’s evaluation process. An amendment was proposed and accepted to include periodic updates on progress towards annual goals.
