- Meeting Overview:
The Metuchen School Board’s recent meeting focused on updates to the district’s curriculum, the introduction of new staff members, and innovative initiatives like artificial intelligence, while also hearing from a concerned parent about high school scheduling.
During the meeting, the board introduced several new staff members who will be filling key roles in the district. Eric Fwell was presented as a leave replacement English teacher at Metuchen High School. Fwell shared his extensive background in college teaching, literary criticism, and journalism, highlighting his work with major companies like Marvel, DC, and Disney. Heather Mills Pavonis, the new supervisor of guidance, expressed her enthusiasm for returning to Metuchen, noting her personal connection to the area through her husband, a graduate of Metuchen High School. Lisa Par, a retired ESL teacher from Jersey City, was introduced as the ESL leave replacement teacher at Campbell School. Par conveyed her eagerness to continue teaching part-time.
Following the introductions, the board opened the floor to public comments, although no one stepped forward to speak initially. The meeting then moved to reports from various committees. Chris Derflinger reported on the curriculum committee meeting, which he had reviewed through notes. Dr. Hazar provided updates on district testing and highlighted the focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) programs at Edgar and Campbell Schools. Edgar’s goals include character education emphasizing respect, responsibility, and kindness, while Campbell School is also focusing on SEL competencies and wellness initiatives. Derflinger also mentioned ongoing curriculum updates, including new documents and proposed changes to the high school’s 12th-grade semester math courses to include a more data literacy-focused curriculum. Revisions to the English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum for kindergarten and sixth grade were also discussed.
The policy committee reported on their recent meeting, noting no mandatory reviews but discussing artificial intelligence initiatives within the district. They emphasized the importance of maintaining and making homework guidelines more visible to the community.
A notable moment came when parent Alisa Schli raised concerns about the high school scheduling system. Schli, a resident of H Dorian Road, pointed out that her senior son was consistently assigned math classes during the last period of the day, which she felt was detrimental to his learning experience. She questioned why math was scheduled at this time. A board member suggested that this might simply be a matter of “bad luck” due to the random nature of scheduling and encouraged Schli to reach out to the guidance department for further clarification.
The student board member, Miss Tresta, provided a report highlighting various student activities across the district. She mentioned the excitement surrounding an upcoming book fair at the elementary school, the preparations for student council elections at the middle school, and the “Lights” week of events at the high school, which includes sports and games significant for seniors. Tresta also noted the efforts by club presidents and captains in organizing a book club fair to attract new members.
The meeting then transitioned to administrative matters, with the minutes from the previous meetings approved unanimously. In the finance section, a motion was made to approve several items listed on the agenda, which passed without discussion. The personnel items were also approved unanimously.
Towards the end of the meeting, several announcements were made, including the approaching midpoint of the marking period and school closures on October 3rd for Rosh Hashanah. Attendees were reminded of voter registration deadlines, educator nominations, and various school events, including a “Meet the Teachers Night” and ongoing fundraising activities. A light-hearted moment occurred when a board member humorously mentioned the local sports scene, stating, “No matter how hard the New York Mets try, the Phillies have won the NL East,” which elicited laughter from the attendees.
