- Meeting Overview:
The Miami Lakes Special Needs Advisory Board recently convened to address several issues, with the most discussion revolving around the extensive renovation of the Miami Lakes Library. This renovation, expected to last approximately 12 to 14 months, will include a 5,000-square-foot expansion, a second auditorium, updated electrical and data systems, new computers, and a dedicated area for children. The board is considering ways to maintain library services during the renovation, such as establishing a temporary location or directing patrons to the North Branch.
Representatives from the Miami Public Library System presented a variety of specialized resources and programs, including sensory-friendly materials, social narratives, library sensory kits, and tactile art piece programs. The library’s proactive outreach, including a mobile lending device program that allows individuals to borrow Chromebooks, tablets, and hotspots, was also discussed. The possibility of collaborating with the library on events such as the annual resource fair was met with enthusiasm from the board.
The board’s agenda also covered the planning of a back-to-school picnic event in partnership with the Card Centers. The event, tentatively named “back to school special needs picnic,” aims to be inclusive of all children with special needs. Considerations for the event include timing—proposing after the school year begins to accommodate families on vacation—the ideal location, with Mary Collins Park being a top choice for its amenities, and the inclusion of food trucks and entertainment such as a magic show. Further discussions included the potential for the library to contribute activities like a story walk.
In matters of new business, the meeting addressed the introduction of a new therapy service by Javier Gonzalez, the founder of DEA Pediatric Therapy, which offers physical, occupational, and speech therapy for children up to 21 years old. The board welcomed his service and shared the monthly meeting schedule to facilitate his participation.
The board proceeded to deliberate on the allocation of funds for various programs and events. A notable discussion took place on the allocation of $500 for an animation class and the coordination of event logistics, such as the need for Spanish translation. There was confusion regarding the need to vote for the refreshment order, stemming from a previous approval two years ago, but it was clarified that a re-vote was necessary after a year had passed. A motion was made and passed to allocate $500 from the Community program for an upcoming celebration event.
Another topic was the continuation of a popular karate program, which had received positive feedback from parents. A motion was made to extend the program for an additional 10 weeks at the same cost as the previous session. Additionally, the board approved $600 for a sensory-friendly movie event at the Miami Lakes theater.
The board also explored the idea of increasing visibility for the special needs community by wrapping a town car or police car with the Special Needs Advisory Board logo. Additionally, there was a suggestion to place autism stickers on town cars, subject to the development of a suitable design and concept.
The meeting concluded with announcements of community involvement, including the board’s support for an upcoming gala event for the art of Florida and Angels Reach. A committee member was also announced to be added to the corporate side of the autism speaks walk.
