Miami Lakes to Co-Host Senior Event with United Healthcare
- Meeting Overview:
The Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee convened recently to discuss a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of the town’s senior residents. Among the agenda items, the most development was the proposal to co-host Florida Senior Days with United Healthcare and the Florida Assisted Living Association, which could bring 200-300 seniors to the town for a special event.
The committee engaged in detailed deliberations on the feasibility of hosting Florida Senior Days. The event, sponsored by United Healthcare and the Florida Assisted Living Association, posed logistical challenges, such as the need for an appropriate venue and the committee’s role as a co-sponsor. The Roberto Alonzo Community Center, with a capacity of 160, was considered too small, but the possibility of using additional outdoor space, such as the parking lot, was discussed. The committee agreed to work with the organization and Tallahassee to host the event.
Further discussions explored the provision of engaging activities for the seniors in Miami Lakes, including a senior karaoke competition, Domino and billiard tournaments, a talent show, and a theater production. Interest in these events was strong, with committee members requesting additional information on schedules and ticketing.
Budget considerations were addressed, with a focus on planning for the upcoming fiscal year. Members were encouraged to start thinking about their budget needs, particularly in relation to new event proposals. The committee discussed the importance of making adjustments to the budget to accommodate different categories of expenditure.
Field trips for seniors were also a focal point, with specific proposals for outings to Marlins stadium. Quotes for bus transportation were examined, and there was a discussion about the size of the buses required and the potential to accommodate all interested seniors. Dates and departure times for the trips were provided, and the committee debated various logistical aspects, such as museum entrance and event coverage.
The committee tackled the issue of event registration, discussing ways to manage sign-ups for field trips and other activities. A proposal was put forward to have an initial registration period exclusively for Miami Lakes residents, with the possibility of opening up to external participants later. The idea of charging a nominal fee for events to deter no-shows was debated, alongside suggestions for implementing a waiting list system and penalties for absences.
The use of Eventbrite as a registration tool sparked debate, considering whether seniors would be adept at using the platform. The possibility of offering instructional classes on Eventbrite usage was suggested. This led to a broader discussion on event logistics, involvement of sponsors, and the potential for birthday celebrations, Zumba classes, and ice cream socials. Concerns were raised about the turnover of contact persons from organizations offering services to seniors, and the idea of inviting FIU to present their neighborhood help program was considered.
The committee also discussed the Mr. and Miss Miami Lakes contest, ultimately deciding against holding the event due to the challenges in garnering senior participation and the associated costs. Instead, a decision was made to prioritize organizing more field trips for seniors.
The meeting concluded with announcements of upcoming events, including Bingo, a health lecture on diabetes, and a lecture from Barry University.
