Miami Lakes Town Council Discusses Communication Board Initiative and Local Business Promotion
- Meeting Overview:
The Miami Lakes Town Council meeting covered several significant initiatives, including the introduction of a communication board to support special needs individuals and a promotional effort aimed at boosting local businesses through the Miami Lakes Loco Lotto.
The proposal for a communication board at Veterans Park was one of a notable topics addressed during the meeting. A local therapy provider expressed interest in sponsoring part of the initiative, potentially contributing $5,000. The council deliberated on the board’s design. Durability and maintenance were key considerations, with suggestions to place the board in a shaded area to protect it from the elements. The council also explored the possibility of adding more equipment to the park, particularly for special needs use, and considered trialing the communication board to assess its effectiveness before expanding the project. A motion to present the proposal to the council at the earliest opportunity was unanimously supported, with a suggestion to negotiate for two boards to potentially lower costs.
In addition to the communication board initiative, the council heard a presentation on the Miami Lakes Loco Lotto, a new effort to promote local businesses. This lottery-style bingo card system encourages residents to shop locally by offering a chance to win prizes. Participants purchase a card for $2 and collect stamps when they shop at any of the 24 featured local businesses. The initiative, backed by the Economic Development Committee, plans to enhance local business visibility during the holiday season from November 7 to January 7. Marketing efforts include partnerships with influencers and advertisements in the Miami Laker newspaper. The lottery drawing will occur at a chamber luncheon in January.
The council also discussed several upcoming community events. The Abilities Expo, scheduled for October 17-19, aims to foster community engagement and highlight local talents. An inclusive job skills seminar is planned for October 28 to support young adults with unique abilities, with a budget allocated for promotional materials and logistics. The October Fest and a mental health fall festival are also on the horizon, with council members planning to attend these events in a personal capacity.
Public safety was another topic of interest, particularly concerning Florida’s open carry laws. The council debated whether an armed society could deter violence, considering anecdotal evidence and statistical queries. Differing perspectives on gun regulations and public safety were voiced.
