Miami Lakes Town Council Discusses New After-School Program for Special Needs Children
- Meeting Overview:
The Miami Lakes Town Council meeting centered around a proposed after-school program aimed at supporting children with disabilities, specifically addressing a lack of current services for children with more complex needs such as autism and emotional challenges. The program, suggested by a representative from Angel’s Reach, a nonprofit organization with over two decades of experience serving the autism community, intends to offer a blend of therapeutic and recreational activities without incurring costs for the city.
The proposed program would fill a significant gap in available services for approximately 1,000 children, about 500 of whom face emotional difficulties that limit their participation in existing programs. The organization plans to implement a professional staff-to-child ratio of 2:1 or 3:1. The program would accommodate at least 25 children initially, grouping them based on functionality to tailor the support to their specific needs.
The council heard that the program aims to operate during the summer months, potentially extending into the academic year, with sessions running Monday through Friday. The logistical details regarding transportation were also discussed, with families having the option to transport their children or use county-provided services. Funding for the program could be sourced through insurance or scholarships, allowing it to operate without placing a financial burden on the town.
Concerns were raised about the qualifications of Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) and the importance of having well-trained personnel on-site. To address these concerns, the proposed program would employ Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and a dedicated team of therapists to ensure consistent and effective support.
The discussion also covered the costs of existing services, noting that current options are prohibitively expensive for many families. The proposed program outlined a pricing structure lower than private organizations, with full-day sessions costing $145 per week and half-days at $90, compared to fees reaching $500 elsewhere.
The council acknowledged the need for this initiative, emphasizing the dual focus on both academic remediation and life skills training. A unique aspect of the program would be its entrepreneurship initiative, allowing students to engage in activities like podcasting, aimed at enhancing their learning and engagement.
Another discussion at the meeting was the necessity of involving the education board in planning, to ensure access to school facilities and to lend credibility to the program. The presenters expressed a willingness to collaborate with the Education Advisory Board to secure support and facilitate the program’s implementation.
Additionally, the council reviewed the success of Autism Awareness Month activities and discussed plans for upcoming events, including a sensory room for the Fourth of July celebrations and a town anniversary event in December. The importance of community involvement and effective communication was reiterated to ensure the successful execution of these initiatives.
The council also approved funding for an animation class for students, along with a proposal to sponsor a pickleball tournament designed to promote awareness for special needs.
