Miami Lakes Town Council Prepares for Networking Event Amid Best of Miami Lakes Promotion Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The Miami Lakes Town Council meeting focused on organizing an upcoming networking event in collaboration with the Miami Lakes Chamber, while addressing challenges related to the ongoing Best of Miami Lakes promotion. Members discussed logistics, engagement strategies, and the complexities of the nomination process for local businesses.
The council’s primary agenda was planning the next networking social, scheduled for August 26th at Gaucho’s. The decision was made to partner with the Miami Lakes Chamber to support local businesses, using remaining budget allocations. The timing of the event, set after schools resume, was chosen to maximize engagement. Members expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing its potential to boost business connections within the community.
In parallel, council members tackled the logistics of the Best of Miami Lakes promotion, which recognizes local businesses through nominations and awards. Approximately 200 promotional stickers, meant to acknowledge nominated businesses, remained undistributed. Concerns were raised about ensuring all nominees received proper recognition, with members discussing how to divide and deliver the stickers effectively. The Economic Development Committee (EDC) played a role in reviving its involvement in the promotion.
The logistics of the nomination process were explored in detail. Businesses must have a Business Tax Receipt (BTR) license to qualify, a requirement that applies even to home-based entities. The open nomination system allows voters to submit entries, leading to issues with spelling variations and multiple category nominations for the same business. For instance, variations like “Chula’s,” “Chula’s Mexican,” and “Chula’s Cocteleria” caused complications in vote tallying. The council recognized the need for businesses to guide customers in voting accurately to avoid vote dilution across categories.
Key promotional graphics were created for businesses to share on social media, encouraging focused voting within specific categories. Members highlighted the risk of vote splitting, which could prevent a business from winning if votes are scattered across multiple categories, such as “best cup of coffee” and “best breakfast.”
A dedicated subcommittee from the EDC boot camp will handle vote tallying, with the top four nominees in each category announced on September 25th during the boot camp event. Final voting will occur from September 25th to October 1st, with winners announced on October 5th via social media. These winners will be featured in the Miami Laker’s October 16th issue.
The council also deliberated the nomination categories, addressing past frustrations over category definitions. For instance, the absence of a specific category for realtors led to broker dissatisfaction last year. Templates were created to help businesses direct their customers more effectively in the voting process.
In addition to promotional efforts, the council focused on logistical planning for upcoming events. The EDC business boot camp is scheduled for September 25th at town hall, with registrations open and nominations for the Best of Miami Lakes accepted until August 31st. The boot camp will feature Milo from NQC as the speaker, focusing on leveraging artificial intelligence for business improvement. However, communication challenges with the speaker were noted, with a suggestion to try alternative contact methods.
The boot camp aims for inclusivity, welcoming businesses of all sizes, not limited to Miami Lakes. The venue can accommodate 80 attendees, with hopes of a full turnout. Members were encouraged to promote the registration link to boost attendance.
