- Meeting Overview:
The Middleborough School Committee meeting recently highlighted several significant initiatives and achievements within the school district, including the recognition of a standout student, the implementation of new educational frameworks, and discussions on improvements to special education programs.
A standout moment in the meeting was the recognition of Karin Horseman, a senior at Middleborough High School, who received the prestigious Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents award. With a GPA of 4.597, Karin has excelled both academically and in extracurricular activities. Her involvement spans from leading the majorette program as the top twirler to notable achievements in the fine arts, including winning the 2022 New England Student Production Award for best music video. Her academic and extracurricular triumphs reflect a well-rounded student poised for future success in college, where she plans to major in digital media and business.
Following this recognition, the meeting delved into the ongoing efforts to enhance educational practices through the introduction of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and the use of data to inform teaching strategies. A comprehensive approach to PLCs has been adopted, allowing educators to analyze student work and strategize on improving learning outcomes. These PLCs are scheduled twice within a six-day cycle. The focus on data-driven decision-making was emphasized, with the introduction of STAR 360 data at the high school level to aid in identifying student needs and tailoring instruction accordingly.
The committee also discussed the Middleborough High School Improvement Plan, presented by the principal, which outlines goals aligned with the district’s strategic initiatives. Key areas of focus include enhancing instructional practices, encouraging active learning, and introducing advanced coursework such as AP Chemistry for sophomores. The introduction of the “Future Ready” program further aims to prepare students for post-secondary life, offering pathways in advanced manufacturing and fostering real-world connections through internships.
Transportation issues were addressed, with improvements noted since the start of the school year. A meeting with Five Star Transportation resulted in better communication and routing processes, although challenges remain due to the dynamic nature of student enrollment. Efforts to ensure consistent access to school meals and accurate bus routes continue.
A significant part of the meeting focused on special education, particularly the Asim program, led by Ms. Val Rufo. This program supports students with significant needs from elementary through post-graduate levels, emphasizing both academic and functional life skills. The Cranberry Cafe, run by students in the program, serves as a practical learning environment where they develop essential job skills. A proposed fundraiser aims to sustain this initiative.
Further discussions involved the importance of family engagement and communication. Changes in event formats, such as open houses, have been well-received, fostering a more inclusive atmosphere for parents and guardians. Upcoming events, like a parent information night, aim to bridge the gap between home and school, providing families with insights into the educational process and student support systems.
The meeting concluded with the approval of a consent agenda, which included donations and fundraisers to support various school programs. The committee expressed gratitude for community contributions.
