- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Middlesex Borough Council meeting, the mayor underscored the need for safety improvements at the Cedar Avenue railroad crossing, one of New Jersey’s most perilous. The mayor elaborated on communications with federal agencies to expedite the installation of reflective sign strips and explore long-term safety enhancements. Residents have voiced persistent safety complaints about the crossing, which poses significant risks to life and property.
The session also delved into environmental and sustainability efforts spearheaded by the borough. A notable initiative is the reactivation of the environmental commission after a 17-year dormancy, tasked with conducting a state-mandated environmental resource inventory. The council is collaborating with an environmental consultant to advance this project. Efforts to collect utility billing data over 14 months are also underway to identify solar energy opportunities.
On community engagement, the meeting highlighted the importance of improving outreach and participation. Discussions focused on enhancing notification methods for meetings, such as employing social media and flyers, to boost attendance. The meeting also addressed the borough’s no solicitation ordinance, clarifying that solicitation activities require permits and emphasizing the role of residents in reporting unauthorized vendors to the police.
Noise complaints from an industrial area were another focal point, with residents expressing dissatisfaction over delayed enforcement. The absence of a comprehensive noise ordinance complicates timely responses, prompting suggestions for appointing a noise control officer. A council member volunteered for a noise technician certification course.
Concerns were raised about the borough’s water management and sewer systems, particularly the improper maintenance of sewer caps leading to flooding and fish kills. The local government is under pressure to independently manage these issues due to inadequate support from external agencies. There is a call for greater accountability from American Water in addressing these concerns.
The mayor also addressed the community’s growing rat problem, attributing it to improper waste management practices. Residents were urged to cooperate in mitigating the issue. In addition, the mayor praised the Recreation Department for organizing a successful haunted house event, which saw substantial attendance and volunteer support.
The council president reported on the completion of a rainwater garden project at the library, funded by Rutgers University, and announced plans to recognize a local public safety figure as the next “Pillar of Middlesex.” The upcoming winter festival, featuring family-friendly activities, was also highlighted, although horse and carriage rides will not be part of this year’s event.
In other public safety news, the police department’s court report revealed several violations, including numerous parking and local ordinance breaches. The department is participating in a National Prescription Drug Take-Back event to assist residents in safely disposing of unwanted medications.
