- Meeting Overview:
The Middletown Town Council recently recognized Robert W. Seamer with the 2023 Dennis J. Board Veteran of the Year award for his outstanding service to veterans. This honor led a series of community-focused discussions at the latest council meeting which included the successful launch of a new skate park, the upcoming grand opening of an inclusive playground, and the advancement of a veterans housing project.
Robert W. Seamer’s dedication to veterans’ affairs earned him high praise from the council members and the community. His exemplary military service and contributions to the Middletown Veterans Affairs Committee were celebrated, and in his speech, Seamer extended gratitude to his peers and loved ones who supported his endeavors. Following the award presentation, the council shifted focus to local community projects and town improvements.
One of the highlights was the enthusiastic response to the new skate park. This project was hailed as a positive development that emerged from the community’s needs during the pandemic. It is designed to be inclusive. Local businesses have shown their support by donating equipment and refreshments, further solidifying the park as a community effort. The council touched upon the grand opening of the skate park, which is anticipated to be a community event, even teasing the possibility of a skate-off between committee members and residents.
In addition to the skate park, the town is nearing the completion of an all-inclusive playground tailored to children with diverse abilities. The council also discussed the progress of a new dog park, which is set to open soon.
A pressing topic during the meeting was the veterans housing project, specifically the remediation phase to address environmental concerns. Although faced with a bid that exceeded expectations, the council expressed satisfaction with the collaborative efforts made to overcome financial hurdles and advance the project. This initiative is part of the council’s broader goal to support veterans through housing and community integration.
The council also announced the introduction of new town hall hours, an initiative designed to better serve residents who cannot visit during conventional working hours. Public-facing departments will now be open from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM on meeting nights, allowing for increased accessibility without the need for prior appointments.
Public engagement was a focal point as well, with residents taking the opportunity to voice their concerns and requests. Among the comments was a proposal to donate a sapling for a memorial dedicated to veterans and volunteers, which the council received with interest. Another public concern came from residents near St. Mary’s school, who sought transparency and the opportunity to provide input on the school’s intention to rent its facilities to a charter school. The community members expressed apprehension about potential impacts on the neighborhood and emphasized the importance of adequate notification and information sharing. The council acknowledged these concerns, assuring that it would work with relevant departments to ensure due process, transparency, and the dissemination of information as the issue evolves.
