The recognition of May 2024 as Jewish American Heritage Month stood out as a notable moment. Representatives from the Jewish Federation in the Heart of New Jersey spoke on the impact of Jewish Americans, the importance of standing against hate and violence, and their mission alignment with the township’s goals. Mayor Perry highlighted the peaceful coexistence of large Muslim and Jewish populations in Israel and expressed concern over the rise of anti-American and anti-Semitic rhetoric.

Following the same theme of community welfare and recognition, Mental Health Awareness Month was also acknowledged, with Middletown High School South student Piper Wyman and her support group in attendance.

The meeting commenced with discussions on community engagement and support for mental health initiatives. The “Be the Difference” Community Walk for suicide awareness and prevention, scheduled for May 19th, was a focal point, aimed at raising funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The walk, organized by Piper, was commended for her dedication and motivation, receiving support from the Mayor and council members who encouraged community participation.

The council addressed several other proclamations, including Municipal Clerks Week, Older Americans Month, Buddy Poppy Month, Elks Youth Week, and Police Week in Middletown. The Mayor took time to specifically acknowledge the exceptional work of the municipal clerk’s office, which plays a role in community administration.

Public hearings on proposed ordinances revealed the council’s active involvement in local infrastructure and regulatory matters. One ordinance granted authority to the Middletown Sewage Authority to manage grease trap and interceptor regulations, and another aimed to alleviate financial burdens on residents by reducing commuter parking lot fees in response to New Jersey Transit fare increases. Both ordinances passed on second and final reading. New legislations were also introduced, including one addressing fire prevention local business registration fees and another providing funds for town property acquisition.

The meeting also included the adoption of a consent agenda, with various resolutions passed and the Township Committee members abstaining from comments. The Mayor expressed gratitude for the reduction in parking fees and commended the staff for their efforts in drafting the ordinance. Additionally, the annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) resolution was passed without any public comments, and the call for public comments on the CDBG resolution saw no response, leading to the closure of the public portion and adjournment of the meeting.
