Middletown School Board Bids Farewell to Long-Standing Members Amidst Discussions on Spending and Communication
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Middletown School Board meeting, the community expressed gratitude towards three outgoing board members, with particular emphasis on Leonora Caminiti for her 18-year dedication. The meeting also addressed concerns regarding school district spending and public communication, alongside reports on student achievements and ongoing initiatives.
The meeting opened with an emotional farewell to three departing board members, most notably Leonora Caminiti, who was celebrated for her long service and contributions. Board members and attendees shared anecdotes and expressed appreciation for Caminiti’s advocacy work, particularly her efforts to include sign language in the curriculum and her leadership on the co-curricular committee. A humorous moment was recalled by a fellow board member involving Caminiti’s reaction at a hockey game. Superintendent Jessica Alfone also thanked the outgoing members for their volunteer work, emphasizing the impact of their service on the community.
In addition to the farewells, the board addressed issues related to school district spending. Bernie Doss, a Middletown resident, brought attention to a recent article highlighting the district’s spending per student, which ranks in the bottom quarter compared to other districts. Doss encouraged the community to review the findings. He urged board members to scrutinize legal fees per pupil and other financial data to ensure accurate representation and decision-making.
The meeting also tackled concerns about communication between the board and the public. Kristen Bulan, a member of the public, raised questions regarding the transparency of meeting agendas and the board’s transcription process. She suggested forming a committee to streamline communication, expressing frustration over a perceived lack of clarity. The board engaged in discussions about improving how public questions are documented and addressed.
Student achievements were also highlighted during the meeting. Jessica Cerillo, a senior at Middletown High School South, presented updates on various school activities, celebrating the accomplishments of students in the New Jersey Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America program. The chapter collectively earned 12 medals in a leadership competition, with several students receiving gold medals for their projects. Cerillo also reported on Aiden Denberg’s national achievement in the apparel and fashion challenge and Ella Cochran’s success in the counseling and mental health services challenge. The boys’ soccer team was recognized for winning its first sectional championship, and a recent school open house was noted for its high attendance.
The board discussed ongoing initiatives, including efforts to improve attendance rates and combat chronic absenteeism. A board member inquired about the status of related surveys, hoping for improved metrics compared to the previous year. The board also considered a proposal to feature updates from different schools within the district during future meetings.
Superintendent Alfone provided updates on strategic planning subcommittees. He also addressed a recent delayed school opening, explaining the decision was made due to safety concerns related to icy sidewalks and low temperatures. Alfone emphasized prioritizing student and staff safety and expressed gratitude for the community’s understanding.
