Middletown School Board Discusses Exam Reforms, Security Enhancements, and Prescription Plan Savings
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Middletown School Board meeting, discussions took place focusing on educational reforms, financial updates, and security improvements within the district. A key highlight was the announcement of changes to midterm and final exam structures at the high school level. These changes are driven by feedback from students and parents. The new policy reserves high-stakes assessments for advanced placement, dual enrollment, World Language, and selected core subjects. This revision means that students who previously faced up to eight exams may now experience a reduced burden. Additionally, 11th-grade students achieving an average of 90% or above will be exempt from final exams, expanding a privilege formerly available only to 12th graders. This adjustment is designed to alleviate pressure on juniors amidst their college preparation efforts.
1:12:42In another important topic, the board discussed anticipated savings from changes to the prescription plan formulary. These changes are expected to generate considerable savings through increased rebates and discounts and are set to be implemented on April 1, 2024. The details of these adjustments were covered during the finance and facilities committee meeting, where updates from the health insurance broker were shared. The proposed changes aim to optimize cost-efficiency for the district’s financial health in the current and upcoming years.
The board also received an update on the ongoing sale of Port M, which, despite some delays, is progressing as the county conducts due diligence, including surveys and environmental reports. The completion of this sale is targeted within the current fiscal year.
Security within the district’s schools was another major focus. A comprehensive report prepared by Stonate Associates was reviewed, providing a positive assessment of the district’s existing security measures. The report did identify areas for potential enhancement. The board was informed that the administration has already begun addressing these recommendations to ensure a robust security environment for students and staff.
Public comments featured expressions of gratitude towards Mrs. Farley, who is concluding her service on the board. Her contributions were recognized by Dr. Albone, alongside the celebration of the year’s outstanding educators and support staff. Formal recognition of these individuals is scheduled for April 23 at High School North.
The board also detailed upcoming events, including a virtual information session planned for January 29 to assist with pre-kindergarten and kindergarten registration. This session aims to accommodate a larger audience. Additionally, the high school elective course selection process is set to begin soon, with an extended timeframe to allow families ample opportunity for discussion.
During the public comment segment, Franchesca Lino, a district parent, addressed concerns relating to a recent ethical investigation. She highlighted the absence of clear policies regarding staff social media use. Lino advocated for a review and update of Middletown’s policies to align with those in neighboring districts, emphasizing the importance of transparency and trust within the community.
Another comment praised the increased interest and participation in the unified basketball and cheer programs. The cheer program, now called Middletown United Cheer, is reportedly engaging more students and planning to design fundraising merchandise, reflecting its growing popularity.
