- Meeting Overview:
At a recent Middletown School Board meeting, members addressed concerns regarding playground funding for New Monmouth School while also celebrating notable academic achievements and strategic planning initiatives.
A point of discussion emerged during the public comment segment when a representative from the New Monmouth School PTA voiced concerns over the condition of their playground equipment. The speaker emphasized that the existing facilities are outdated and insufficient, especially for the more than 500 students, including those with disabilities, who rely on the equipment. The PTA had raised $31,000 for a shade structure but expressed frustration that grants for new playground equipment were being allocated to other schools with potentially less urgent needs. The board clarified that state grants are competitive and limited, with New Monmouth School being considered for funding in the upcoming application cycle anticipated to open in December or January.
This follows a rigorous evaluation process that ensures compliance with research-driven performance criteria. Meanwhile, Middletown High School North is undergoing a similar accreditation process, with optimism for a favorable outcome.
Dr. Carrian’s presentation on the district’s New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) results further bolstered the district’s academic standing. Students in grades three through eight performed above state averages, particularly in science, where fifth graders achieved a 33% proficiency rate compared to the state’s 27%. The district’s high school students also outperformed state averages in English Language Arts and geometry, with significant percentages meeting or exceeding expectations.
In addition to academic achievements, the board discussed ongoing projects and initiatives. The Facilities Committee reported the completion of the High School North track work and continued progress on the C Annex plans, with submissions pending state approval. Playground renovations at Harmony School have been completed, while plans for River Plaza’s playground include accepting a donation from the PTA and purchasing components through a local recreation grant.
The meeting also highlighted the district’s strategic planning efforts, with a five-year plan in the works. The first stakeholder meeting is scheduled for November 14, and community input is being sought through a survey to guide future planning endeavors. This initiative aims to align district goals with community needs.
The Technology Committee shared updates on projects for the 2024-2025 school year, including enhancements to cybersecurity and the consolidation of security camera services.
The board also celebrated student achievements, with the High School North football team winning its first division championship since 1983 and High School South’s Lady Eagles cross country team securing county championship status. These accomplishments, along with the recognition of academic and extracurricular successes, underscore the district’s vibrant student life.
