Milltown Borough Council Addresses Historical Building Repairs and Beautification Efforts
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Milltown Borough Council meeting, discussions centered on preserving historic sites, enhancing community aesthetics, and addressing public concerns over water usage.
55:56A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to the financial challenges faced by the Milltown Historical Society. Steve Gregus, representing the Society, brought to the council’s attention the need for funding to maintain historical buildings under their care. Over the years, the Society has shouldered the financial responsibility for various repairs, including critical roof replacements and structural improvements, without substantial council support. Gregus emphasized the urgency of replacing the roof on the Annex Building, which is now forty years old, with an estimated cost of $7,750. He warned that material costs could increase after March, urging the council to allocate funds for these repairs to prevent further deterioration.
Gregus also raised concerns about the Schwend House, for which the council received a $100,000 county grant six years ago. He expressed frustration over the lack of progress and warned that if action is not taken soon, the building might require demolition, leading to additional costs. Gregus implored the council to utilize the existing funds to address the building’s condition, stressing the importance of acting before the grant money expires.
In response to the Schwend House issue, a council member mentioned a draft framework for a steering committee to address the property’s future. The legal counsel is reviewing this draft to facilitate a collaborative approach among stakeholders. The council acknowledged previous stagnation on this issue and committed to moving forward with a structured plan.
0:06The meeting also featured a presentation by Bunny Jascot from the revitalization committee, who detailed efforts to beautify Main Street. The initiative, which began in 2021, involves cleaning and planting the empty planters along North and South Main Street. Jascot highlighted the introduction of new self-watering planters, known as Earth Planters, strategically placed in key locations to reduce manual watering efforts. She reported positive feedback from local businesses and citizens. Jascot announced the opening of the Milltown Free Seed Library on February 22, 2025, which will feature a variety of seeds, including pollinator plants and culinary herbs, emphasizing the importance of green spaces in the borough.
During the meeting, Councilman Collins expressed admiration for Jascot’s work and inquired about how businesses could get involved with the planters. Jascot suggested contacting Phil from the revitalization committee for more information. The council also discussed the financial recovery related to a damaged planter, though specifics remained uncertain.
43:00Public comments during the meeting raised several community concerns, particularly regarding water usage data from New Brunswick. One member of the public highlighted an increase in water rates and demanded accountability for the 20 million gallons of unaccounted-for water. There were calls for improved monitoring of hydrant flushing and documentation of water usage in borough buildings. Concerns over recreational expenses, particularly regarding the pool, were also discussed, with suggestions to investigate potential leaks under the turnpike.
0:06The council addressed other routine matters, including the introduction of Ordinance 25-1555, which pertains to exceeding municipal budget appropriation limits and establishing a cap bank. The ordinance’s second reading and public hearing are scheduled for February 10, 2025. Additionally, the council approved a resolution authorizing the payment of municipal obligations amounting to $23,557.12.
43:00In other discussions, the council confirmed ongoing projects to relocate the historic train station and establish a Star Preservation Commission. Collaborations with the county and Preservation New Jersey were confirmed, and upcoming events at the Milltown Senior Center were announced. The Recreation Department shared updates on various programs, and the Milltown 4th of July organization announced their centennial celebration event on July 4th.
