Minnetonka School Board Celebrates Student Achievements and Approves Facility Maintenance Bids
- Meeting Overview:
The Minnetonka School Board meeting focused on celebrating academic excellence, approving facility maintenance projects, and discussing new educational initiatives. Recognition was given to students and teachers for their exceptional achievements, while the meeting also addressed topics like facility upgrades and educational technology enhancements.
The meeting opened with a robust recognition program celebrating the outstanding achievements of Minnetonka High School students and their influential teachers. A notable highlight was the acknowledgment of 28 seniors who were named National Merit semi-finalists for the class of 2026, placing them among the top 1% of PSAT test takers. These students are now eligible for substantial scholarships for their post-secondary education. The board also honored students who achieved perfect ACT scores of 36, including Lucas Granucci, Eric Kowalski, and Benjamin Krauss, among others.
During a scholars breakfast event, students took the opportunity to honor teachers who impacted their educational journeys. Olivia Babe expressed gratitude towards Mrs. Katov, highlighting how her encouragement fostered a sense of curiosity and a passion for learning. Milan Dargy thanked M. Rogers for supporting his leadership endeavors, while Cooper Dobbins credited Miss Hayden with transforming his perspective on literature.
The meeting then transitioned to approving several bids for facility maintenance projects scheduled for summer 2026. The board approved multiple bids for window and roofing replacements across several schools. Lindy Construction was awarded a $555,000 contract for window replacements at Clear Springs Elementary School, while CM Construction Company secured a $631,900 contract for similar work at Minowashta Elementary School. In roofing, Gag Sheet Metal Incorporated received a $561,000 contract for Deep Haven Elementary School, and Balman Roofing and Coating was contracted for roofing work at Minnetonka Middle School West at $773,297.
Dan expressed satisfaction with the conservative budgeting that allowed the district to come in under budget estimates by approximately $1.3 million. This financial prudence enables the district to allocate funds to additional projects. These projects are vital for preserving the district’s assets, valued at approximately $800 million, and honoring past investments by taxpayers.
Following the bids, the board authorized the sale of 2026A general obligation school building bonds. This $5 million bond is part of a tiered borrowing strategy designed to prevent property tax increases related to school building costs. The first tranche will finance design and permitting for two major middle school projects, aligning with the public’s favorable vote of 69% in support of the bond strategy.
The meeting also addressed the implementation of new educational initiatives, including the recently introduced block scheduling and advisory programs at Minnetonka Middle School East. Student executive board officers shared their experiences, noting that the extended class periods provide ample time for completing assignments, thus reducing homework loads. However, some students expressed challenges in maintaining focus during the 82-minute sessions, particularly those with learning disabilities. The board discussed ongoing adjustments to the schedule.
The advisory program was praised for its inclusive nature, particularly benefiting immersion students by fostering connections across grades. Students appreciated the flex time provided, which serves as a valuable study hall for completing work and seeking teacher assistance. Suggestions for improving the advisory period included moving sessions to the end of the day for increased productivity and introducing more varied activities.
Educational technology was another focal point, with discussions on balancing screen time in schools. The district emphasized technology as a catalyst for learning, supporting student engagement and success. Measures are in place to ensure safe and responsible technology use, with a revised K-12 digital citizenship curriculum. The board recognized the complexities of screen time and the importance of equitable and effective integration of technology in education.
The meeting concluded with community updates and reports, highlighting legislative advocacy efforts and community education events. The Superintendent’s report noted Minnetonka’s selection by the National School Boards Association to present on student involvement in governance.
