Minuteman Career and Technical School Committee Approves Senior Wellness Trip Amidst Program Revisions and International Travel Plans
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Minuteman Career and Technical School Committee meeting, members approved a senior wellness trip scheduled for May 22-24, 2026, at Camp Winnaki in New Hampshire, while also discussing updates to the school’s program of studies and planning for an international trip to England and Scotland in April 2027.
The senior wellness trip, designed for the graduating class, aims to provide a meaningful experience focused on relaxation and reflection. The trip is set to include various activities with camp counselors leading structured programs, as well as free time for personal exploration. The cost is estimated at $200 per student, with fundraising activities and financial support options available to reduce the financial burden on families. The committee showed unanimous support for the trip, moving swiftly to approve the proposal with a roll call vote. Transport arrangements ensure all students will travel together by bus, and sufficient chaperones will be present, consisting of teachers and potentially parents.
In an effort towards expanding educational horizons, the committee discussed an international trip to England and Scotland, which is an extension of a previously planned trip to Ireland. This initiative represents a shift for Minuteman, as international trips have been infrequent. Organized by EF Tours, the trip is aimed at fostering global citizenship, with participants having the option to earn three undergraduate credits. Scheduled during the April break, the trip will not interfere with students’ instructional time. Costs are expected to range from $3,500 to $5,500, with payment plans available. The committee expressed enthusiasm about the educational opportunities provided by international travel.
Another topic was the extensive revisions made to the program of studies, which have been undertaken to address previous inaccuracies and ensure alignment with state standards. These revisions focus on policy language and the organization of course materials, with the document now structured by grade level for clarity. Elective opportunities are emphasized as integral to the educational experience, and advanced coursework options are highlighted. The committee noted the importance of DESE code alignment to ensure proper credit for the school’s programs.
The newly revised program of studies now includes mission and non-discrimination statements at the beginning, with guidance counselors meeting individually with students to discuss course selections. The committee recognized the collaborative effort by staff and administration in completing these revisions swiftly, acknowledging the usual lengthy process involved in such initiatives. The document is not yet final, with the committee set to review it upon completion before publication.
In admissions updates, the principal reported that 177 students had been accepted for the upcoming school year, surpassing the target of 175 slots. This includes 83 out-of-district applicants, which may require a lottery if all choose to enroll. The deadline for Chapter 74 forms, necessary for out-of-district applications, is April 1. The committee discussed the fluid nature of these numbers, noting the possibility of changes as families finalize decisions.
Additionally, the meeting included reports from various subcommittees. The Capital Planning Subcommittee provided updates on the North Building renovation for welding equipment, with a move-in anticipated before the April vacation. Other facilities-related issues, such as ice dams and boiler replacements, were addressed, alongside ongoing procurements for roof and bulkhead replacements.
