Montgomery School Board Faces Curriculum Debates and Prepares for Future Renovations
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Montgomery School Board meeting, members engaged in discussions about curriculum changes, debated financial allocations for course development, and explored upcoming infrastructure projects.
The most pressing topic was the curriculum changes, particularly concerning action items 2.5 and 2.6, which generated debate among board members. Concerns were raised about the lack of detailed information on financial allocations for curricular writing. One board member highlighted that over $57,000 had been approved, yet few courses were explicitly listed, prompting questions about how these funds were being utilized. Emphasizing transparency, the member stated, “if we’re going to invest in something, it would be good to see what it is that we invested in.” This call for clarity resonated with the board’s broader discussion on the importance of accountability and detailed reporting.
The conversation also touched upon the K12 literacy curriculum, with specific focus on the Lucy Calkins units of study. Concerns were raised about its effectiveness given national conversations around the science of reading. A board member expressed the need for evidence to support continued reliance on this curriculum, referencing public concerns from parents and professionals. This sentiment was echoed by another participant who emphasized the need for alignment with educational standards and best practices.
Further complicating the curriculum discussion was a letter from 20 higher education faculty members, which raised concerns about the math curriculum, particularly the removal of a key algebra course. The faculty argued that this decision negatively impacted students’ math skills and had ripple effects in high school science courses. Despite this, some board members questioned the relevance of the letter to the current agenda, which focused primarily on literacy.
Another aspect of the meeting was the discussion surrounding the introduction of a new AP Seminar course. A board member requested detailed information about the course, emphasizing the need to understand its impact on college readiness. This request for transparency highlighted differing perspectives on educational evaluation, with some members advocating for a more comprehensive view of student achievement beyond standardized tests.
In addition to curriculum matters, the meeting addressed infrastructure needs and future planning. The Operations, Facilities, and Finance Committee discussed ongoing projects, including significant infrastructure needs identified at the high school, such as HVAC upgrades and roof replacements. Plans for a future referendum to fund major capital projects were also discussed, with November 2027 identified as a potential date for the ballot.
Transportation issues were also on the agenda, with an update on a temporary lease agreement for a school bus while awaiting new deliveries. The committee reviewed auditor proposals, with the district’s current auditor providing a lower bid but limited services compared to a competing firm. A change in auditors was recommended to enhance district support.
Public comments during the meeting brought additional perspectives, with concerns about bus tracking services and the preparedness of a new AP course without an established curriculum. The board welcomed Miss Emily Keys as the new supervisor of special services, acknowledging her qualifications and commitment to supporting diverse learners.
