- Meeting Overview:
In an eventful meeting on August 27th, the Montgomery School Board saw a notable resignation and heard public concerns over transparency and ethics. The board also reviewed maintenance updates and discussed plans for a shared service agreement for tennis courts.
The meeting took a turn when a board member announced their resignation due to relocating outside the district. Expressing gratitude for the learning experience and the opportunity to serve, the member emphasized the importance of the intense conversations held within the board. The resignation was unanimously accepted by the board members present, ending the tenure effective immediately.
Public comments during the meeting highlighted concerns about transparency and the handling of a recent advisory opinion from the New Jersey Department of Education’s Office of School Ethics. A community member questioned the board’s reluctance to disclose details of the advisory opinion, stating that the board had repeatedly claimed legal constraints prevented them from sharing the information.
The board also discussed ongoing and completed maintenance projects within the district, including repairs to sewer lines and bathrooms, replacement of boiler pumps, and inspection plans for the girls’ locker room to ensure privacy.
In addition, the board reviewed discussions with the township regarding the creation of a shared service agreement for the high school tennis courts. This agreement aims to allow community access while ensuring the facilities remain in optimal condition for student use. The board anticipates finalizing and approving the agreement by September or October.
The board also celebrated the achievements of the Somerset County Teacher of the Year and the success of the Monty Summer Reads program, which delivered over 700 books to students during the summer break.
