Monticello School Board Approves New Special Education Coordinator Contract Amid Staffing Changes
- Meeting Overview:
In an eventful meeting on August 18th, the Monticello School Board approved changes to the contract for special education coordinators, reflecting adjustments in salary, benefits, and duty terms. These updates come alongside staffing shifts within the district’s special education division and initiatives aimed at improving educational outcomes and resource distribution.
The board’s approval of a new contract for special education coordinators stands out as a crucial development from the meeting. The agreement introduces a new step in the salary schedule, addressing a gap between existing levels, and proposes a 3.45% salary increase for the first year. In addition, the district’s contribution to group insurance underwent a shift, now requiring coordinators to pay a portion of their premiums. A one-time stipend of $2,500 will be granted to each coordinator to ease this transition, effective October 1st. Furthermore, the duty year extends by five days, with two additional holidays, aligning with other administrative contracts. Other modifications encompass reimbursement models and grievance procedures, with a strategic focus on clarity and alignment with administrative standards.
These contractual changes occur in the context of notable staffing movements within the special education department. In a detailed update, a coordinator discussed the departure and replacement of personnel, including Rachel Casper, Lana Tolberg, and Monica O’Neal. The new coordinators, Brian Burns, Chelsea Wickland, and Jenna O’Brien, are expected to maintain momentum in supporting the district’s special education initiatives, which serve over 300 staff members and a student population with a significant representation of Individualized Education Programs.
The meeting also provided insights into the ongoing efforts to refine the special education framework across the cooperative districts. The district’s focus on reducing restrictive measures and implementing non-invasive behavior management strategies, like the “Ukaro” approach, underscores a dedication to enhancing educational environments.
Superintendent Eric Olson’s introduction of Cammy Dstrom as a new member of the district’s team further emphasized the board’s focus on inclusive educational practices. Cammy’s extensive background in education, spanning over two decades, positions her well to contribute to the district’s objectives. Her commitment to building relationships with students and families and fostering an inclusive high school atmosphere reflects the district’s overarching goals.
In addition to personnel changes and special education initiatives, the meeting addressed updates to school policies in response to legislative requirements. The board approved amendments to the high school handbook, accommodating the shift to a trimester system and addressing the use of e-bikes and electric dirt bikes. Changes mandated by the Minnesota Department of Education concerning opt-out information for MCA testing were also incorporated.
Policy updates extended beyond the handbook, with revisions to the district’s testing plans and transportation guidelines. Policies regarding the transportation of public and non-public school students were revised to align with legislative changes, while Policy 722 addressed the district’s approach to handling public data requests. Policy 802 provided guidance on the disposal of obsolete equipment, emphasizing sustainability in technology management.
