Monticello School Board Celebrates Generous Donations and Approves Exciting Student Trips
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Monticello School Board meeting, the board approved exciting student trips to Costa Rica and accepted generous donations from local organizations and anonymous donors. The meeting also touched on student-led initiatives, policy updates, and the recognition of the orchestra program’s achievements.
The Monticello School Board meeting prominently featured discussions on upcoming educational trips that promise to offer students unique learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting. A Spanish teacher presented a proposed educational trip to Costa Rica, scheduled for June 2027, aimed at immersing high school students in the culture and language of the region. The trip will feature visits to natural wonders and cultural experiences, with an itinerary that includes activities such as horseback riding and zip-lining. The total cost per student is set at $3,933, covering transportation, accommodations, meals, and activities. Although no fundraisers have been planned yet, students and families are encouraged to explore individual funding avenues.
In a similar vein, another educational trip to Costa Rica was introduced, focusing on hands-on field research in collaboration with the Seeds of Change program. This trip, scheduled for June 11 to June 20, will allow students to conduct scientific research at a dedicated facility in Costa Rica, emphasizing biodiversity. The total cost is $4,600, which includes university credits, airfare, lodging, meals, and excursions. Students not pursuing university credits will pay a reduced fee of $4,450. Fundraising opportunities, such as selling Costa Rican coffee, were discussed to help alleviate the financial burden for students.
Board members showed enthusiasm for these educational trips, recognizing their potential to broaden student perspectives and deepen their engagement with the Spanish language and scientific research. The trips are designed to accommodate students from various levels, with priority given to older students if interest exceeds capacity.
The board meeting also celebrated the acceptance of notable donations. An anonymous donor contributed $5,000 to support middle school students in need. Additionally, the Monticello Rotary Club donated $524 for hats and gloves and $1,280 for third-grade novels and dictionaries. These contributions were unanimously approved by the board, with expressions of gratitude towards the donors for their continuous support.
Student initiatives were another focus of the meeting. A senior introduced “Letters of Love,” a program creating handmade cards for children with cancer and other illnesses. This initiative has already led to the production of over 100 cards at Monticello High School and has gained backing from local businesses. The board showed support for this endeavor, discussing its financial needs and sustainability beyond the student’s graduation.
In the realm of policy, the board conducted a first reading of several updates. Policy 203.2 was discussed, with Superintendent Eric Olson explaining new language to clarify moments of silence and proclamations. Policy 601 saw minor adjustments in terminology, and Policy 606, concerning textbooks and instructional materials, was reviewed for clarity and compliance.
Policy 610, covering field trips, received a more detailed examination due to its outdated nature. The policy distinguishes between instructional, supplemental, and extended trips, emphasizing that fees should not be assessed for required instructional trips. The board sought reassurance that current practices align with these guidelines, particularly regarding fees for curriculum-integral trips. Superintendent Olson confirmed that instructional trips would not incur fees, unlike supplemental trips where fees might be applicable.
The meeting also acknowledged significant achievements within the district. The orchestra program, led by Miss Shler Stein, was honored with the state meritorious orchestra program award by the Minnesota String Teachers Association. Stein, who has been teaching in the district for 23 years, reflected on the program’s growth since its inception in 1999. The board expressed appreciation for her dual role in directing both middle and high school orchestras and her contributions to the district’s music education.
Lastly, Pinewood Elementary School Principal Shelley Gilmore shared plans for a new school forest, supported by a No Child Left Inside grant. This initiative aims to create an outdoor classroom to enhance STEM education and involve community collaboration. The board approved the establishment of the Pinewood School Forest, expressing excitement for the project’s educational potential.
