Monticello School Board Moves Forward with Superintendent Search Amid Financial Discussions
- Meeting Overview:
The Monticello School Board meeting on December 15, 2025, focused on the superintendent search, financial matters, and the introduction of new courses. The board unanimously approved the characteristics for screening superintendent candidates and discussed the district’s property tax levy, which is set to increase by 21.15% due to a recent voter-approved referendum.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the ongoing search for a new superintendent. Dr. Dan Bitman led the discussion, presenting feedback from approximately 396 respondents, including students, community leaders, parents, and staff, gathered through surveys and listening sessions. This feedback was instrumental in shaping the leadership profile for the new superintendent. Key characteristics identified included excellent interpersonal skills, leadership that reflects knowledge and sensitivity to community diversity, a strong moral compass focused on justice and equality, and effective communication abilities. The board members expressed their agreement with these characteristics, and a motion was made to approve them along with the promotional materials for the job application. Applications are expected to remain open until January 18, with candidate reviews set for February.
In addition to the superintendent search, the board received a presentation from Ena Burke Holder on the district’s financial status, particularly concerning the property tax levy. The board discussed the complexities of property tax calculations and the implications of a 21.15% increase in the overall levy. This increase is primarily attributed to a recent referendum that approved additional funding for the district. Burke Holder clarified that while the general fund levy is set to increase by $3.4 million, other levies will decrease due to enrollment declines and adjustments in state funding. The board emphasized the importance of maintaining fiscal responsibility and discussed potential strategies to manage costs related to retiree health insurance through the OPED trust fund.
An interesting highlight of the meeting was the proposal of four new elective courses aimed at enhancing educational offerings for students. These courses include a “speak and write” course for multilingual learners, an outdoor education course, a course focused on unmanned aerial systems, and an introduction to special education. The board expressed enthusiasm for these additions, noting their alignment with career pathways and core learning objectives. However, the courses on drones and special education are contingent upon grant funding, with decisions expected early next year.
The board also received a report on the district’s successful fall sports season, highlighting achievements such as a state championship in girls swimming and diving and strong performances from various other teams. The report, presented by Gary Reing, noted that five out of eight teams won conference championships. Looking ahead, Reing discussed upcoming winter activities, including first robotics and various fine arts programs.
In a brief agenda item, the board unanimously approved a motion to reschedule their January 5th meeting to January 12th to accommodate more favorable conditions for refinancing a building bond.
