Montville Board Addresses HIB Incidents and NJGPA Test Decline
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Montville School Board meeting, attention was paid to the district’s Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) incidents report and the decline in New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) scores. These urgent educational matters, along with discussions on curriculum, upcoming projects, and staff appointments, were at the forefront of the board’s agenda.
The superintendent’s report on HIB incidents was a focal point, revealing that the district recorded 25 incidents, with the high school being the most affected, accounting for 13 of these. The superintendent underscored the implementation of new measures at Lazar High School aimed at mitigating such incidents. Efforts to improve the school’s lower self-assessment scores for HIB were also discussed.
In the realm of academics, the decline in the district’s NJGPA scores, especially in math, prompted a detailed presentation and subsequent dialogue. This mandatory 11th-grade test, essential for graduation, showed that Montville’s performance dropped from the previous year. The board examined subgroup performances and discussed strategies to uplift student results, such as curriculum articulation, support classes, the integration of new students, and professional development programs.
Another topic that surfaced during the meeting was the need to revise the Middle School grade leader position description to align with the NTA Master contract. Questions arose about the public availability of the schools’ emergency virtual remote instruction plan. The board also reviewed the itinerary for summer construction projects and set a date for the next curricular review. Moreover, the appointment of a new director, Dr. Nicholas Diaz, and the intention to update a 2018 report concerning the non-col band learner were noted.
While the board addressed the absence of drug awareness meetings in July and August, they also contemplated the tuition for out-of-district placements. The board evaluation review by Charlie Peterson was postponed.
