Recommendations included constructing a raised intersection to slow traffic and improving curb accessibility. Alternative suggestions involved modifying the parking lot’s east entrance or aligning a safer crossing with an intersection a block west. The board discussed potential programs involving parents, the school district, or PTOs to improve safety. These ideas included promoting a bike fleet for safe biking education, implementing crossing guards, and establishing a walking school bus. A reflective rectangular flashing beacon was discussed, with plans for the city to install it in the spring to enhance pedestrian crossing safety. The district also considered seeking grants for additional safety measures, potentially partnering with the city. Observations noted improvements on 12th Avenue, including the addition of four-way stops and signage, contributing to a safer environment.

The Minnesota Safe Routes to School Plan was another focal point. The plan aimed to improve safety and convenience for students walking or biking to school, with a presentation outlining the decline in such activities since 1969. Parents’ concerns highlighted high traffic speeds and challenging intersections, particularly around Ellen Hopkins and Probstfield schools. Recommendations based on these concerns emphasized improving crossing safety at specific intersections. The board members engaged with the presenters, addressing the implications of these recommendations. The plans, which involved public engagement and responses from parents, served as a basis for schools to apply for funding to enhance route safety.

In new business, the board unanimously approved a field trip request for the Moorhead High School cross country team. Scheduled for July 20-24, 2025, the trip to Bozeman, Montana, will replace the traditional camping trip to Alexandria, Minnesota. Team captains expressed excitement about new activities like hiking and white-water rafting, promoting team bonding and leadership skills. Financial assistance will be available for those in need, and over half of the team typically participates. A board member shared positive experiences from past trips.

The meeting also included an end-of-year evaluation of the superintendent, who was commended for meeting performance expectations across various areas, including strategic planning and community relationships. The board encouraged further development of partnerships to support the Career Academy’s growth.

Additional updates from the superintendent included details for board members attending an upcoming MSB conference. The organizational segment confirmed meeting schedules for the year, maintaining the usual time on the second and fourth Mondays each month, with adjustments for holidays. Committee appointments were affirmed without changes, and the board approved the standing committee structure. Official depositories for the school district were designated, and the Extra was approved as the district’s official newspaper publication.
