Moorhead City Council Highlights Community Initiatives and Infrastructure Developments
- Meeting Overview:
The Moorhead City Council meeting on November 10, 2025, focused heavily on community-driven initiatives and infrastructure projects aimed at improving the city’s well-being and functionality. Key presentations included the efforts by Friends of the Moorhead Library and the United Way of Cass Clay to address local social issues, as well as the ongoing regional railroad study to enhance safety and accessibility.
The Friends of the Moorhead Library provided an update on their fundraising achievements, which have gathered approximately $1.8 million for the new Moorhead Public Library and community center. This impressive effort was bolstered by a recent additional donation of $12,500, following a previous $25,000 contribution. Karen Jawitz, president of the Friends of the Library, highlighted the success of innovative fundraising events like the “bookmarked” event at Swing Barrel, which involved collaborations with local businesses and attracted community interest. Jawitz expressed her enthusiasm for the library’s future, affirming support from council members and noting, “We can’t wait to move in in the fall.”
Additionally, Dan Klug from the United Way of Cass Clay presented the organization’s mission to combat poverty and homelessness in Moorhead. Klug detailed the United Way’s approach, which includes strategic funding and partnerships to address these issues. He emphasized the organization’s three primary goals: preventing hunger and homelessness, preparing children for academic success, and strengthening families. Klug shared compelling statistics, such as 739 children enrolled in high-quality early childhood programs and over 2,763 people prevented from experiencing homelessness due to United Way-supported services. He highlighted the support needed from the community, asserting the importance of local contributions to create impactful change.
A presentation on homelessness and hunger in Moorhead painted a sobering picture of the challenges faced by residents. Approximately 1,150 individuals experience homelessness on any given night, with many living in cars or moving between friends and family for shelter. Schools reported around 600 students self-identifying as homeless, and 16,000 individuals, including 6,400 children, are affected by food insecurity. The presentation underscored the need for continued community support, emphasizing that 98.5% of donations to the United Way remain in the local area, which helps address these issues.
Transitioning to infrastructure, an ongoing study regarding regional railroad needs was discussed. Initiated by BNSF Railway and involving multiple jurisdictions, the study evaluated 15 rail crossing locations to propose safety and accessibility improvements. HDR, the consultant for the project, suggested modifications including intersection changes and new overpasses at specific locations, such as 40th Avenue South and Highway 52, to enhance safety, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. The study’s findings, derived from extensive public input and collaboration with local agencies, aim to reduce traffic delays and improve emergency service access across the metro area.
The council meeting also included reports from council members about various community and regional events. One member discussed the upcoming Solid Waste Advisory Committee meeting and ongoing interest in organic composting efforts. Another member highlighted the new Red River Regional Dispatch Center, which will enhance emergency response efficiency across two states.
In a somber moment, the council honored the memory of former city council member Millie Mlod and former Moorhead police officer Brad Skank, both of whom made contributions to the community. Mlod was instrumental in transitioning the city to a city manager-led structure, and Skank was remembered for his service and battle with brain cancer. The council extended condolences to their families.
