- Meeting Overview:
The Mora School Board convened to address several pressing educational and community matters, notably approving a student trip to Eastern Europe and discussing ongoing efforts to bridge achievement gaps among student subgroups. The meeting also highlighted various professional development initiatives and upcoming community events designed to enhance educational and extracurricular experiences for students.
A key highlight of the meeting was the unanimous approval of a 2027 educational trip to Eastern Europe for the Mora High School Travel Club. The trip, set for March 29 to April 7, 2027, will take students to Berlin, Prague, Krakow, and Budapest. The representative emphasized the educational benefits of visiting these historically and culturally significant cities, particularly in relation to World War II history. The board’s decision followed a brief discussion, with the motion passing without opposition. This trip is part of the club’s ongoing efforts to provide unique learning experiences, with a previously scheduled visit to Iceland in 2026 already in place.
In a review of educational goals, the board tackled the issue of achievement gaps, particularly focusing on reading and math disparities among various student demographics. The previous year’s reading goal to reduce the gap for students eligible for free/reduced lunch was shifted to math, with a new target to decrease the math achievement gap from 21.1% to 18%. The board discussed the complexities in setting measurable goals and emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue to refine educational strategies and improve outcomes for all students, particularly in light of state averages that show higher percentages of special education and free/reduced lunch students within the district.
The meeting also highlighted the district’s professional development efforts, with a focus on the letters training program aligned with the Read Act. This program, involving 30 elementary teachers in their second year and 23 additional teachers and paraprofessionals in their first year, is a significant component of staff development days. Sessions on AI and Google tools are being introduced to reduce planning time, while topics like Native American education and Chromebook management are being addressed to enhance classroom effectiveness.
The board also discussed the World’s Best Workforce goals, which aim to prepare students for lifelong learning and civic readiness. Although the reading goal has transitioned to a broader literacy plan, the focus remains on reducing achievement gaps and ensuring students are college and career-ready by graduation. The board noted an achievement with 87% of students completing personal learning plans, exceeding the goal of 75%. Discussions around the graduation rate goal highlighted the district’s efforts to improve its 85.61% rate, which, despite progress, remains below the target of 90%. The Alternative Learning Center was identified as a factor impacting graduation rates, with its small student population affecting overall averages.
In addition to educational matters, the board addressed community engagement initiatives, such as the upcoming blood drive on November 13th, aimed at securing a scholarship for a student through donations. Preparations for a food and toy drive to support local families during the holiday season were also discussed. The board expressed appreciation for the student council’s efforts in organizing a successful candidate forum.
This involves compensating teaching staff for participation in planning meetings.
