Mora School Board Certifies Maximum Levy While Recognizing Student Council Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
In the recent Mora School Board meeting, members unanimously approved the certification of the maximum property tax levy for 2026. The meeting also highlighted significant achievements by the student council and recognized board members for their dedication to public education.
A key topic during the meeting was the certification of the maximum property tax levy for 2026. The board discussed the strategic decision to certify the maximum levy, allowing flexibility to adjust the levy downward before the December deadline if needed. The business manager explained the importance of this decision, noting that approving a lower amount would set a new ceiling that could not be exceeded in future requests. Members expressed the importance of maintaining options to ensure adequate funding for essential services, such as safety measures, facilities maintenance, and educational resources.
Further discussion centered on the nuances of property tax assessments and their impact on the school district’s budget. The board was reminded that property tax statements are influenced by property valuations and classifications, which are determined by the county. Residents were encouraged to address any concerns about property valuations before the issuance of tax statements in March, as challenging valuations afterward would be too late. An engaging analogy was used to explain the relationship between property taxes and levies, comparing the tax system to pizza slices. As the total levy, or “pizza,” grows, so do the “slices,” or tax bills, highlighting the correlation between property value and tax obligations.
Adjustmentsttention was given to the student council’s contributions, as presented by Maya Peterson, a senior and co-president of the student council. Maya detailed various initiatives undertaken by the student council, including preparations over the summer for the new school year. The council focused on inclusive activities, such as supporting students with disabilities and differences, and fostering a welcoming environment for new students. Maya highlighted successful events like the open gym during the back-to-school dance, a game show event, and the coronation ceremony, noting positive feedback and increased student engagement.
The student council’s efforts to enhance school spirit were evident in their initiatives, such as creating cheer posters for sports events and organizing themed dress-up days during spirit week.
The board also recognized the achievements of the Mustang Spirit and acknowledged the dedication of the student council and staff involved in organizing homecoming week, which exceeded expectations.
In other matters, the board approved the consent agenda, including a resolution to accept significant donations totaling $16,500 from local organizations and individuals. These contributions will support programs such as the Imagination Library and the Turf Field, as well as the Debbie McGovern scholarship. The board also reviewed fundraising requests for the 2025-2026 school year, primarily supporting activities and athletics. Although formal approval was not required, the board expressed appreciation for the efforts to support school programs.
The meeting included updates on the district’s e-learning plan, which will allow for up to five days of remote instruction after three weather-related closures. The board approved this plan and the related memorandum of agreement with the union. Additionally, a draft cooperative agreement for the 2025-2026 girls’ swimming team was discussed, with a suggestion to review it annually to ensure it remains current.
Finally, the board discussed upcoming events, including homecoming and MEA weekend, and planned a closed meeting for October 2 to discuss property matters. A work session on the board governance plan was tentatively scheduled for early November.
