Mora School Board Debates Contractual Deadlines and Celebrates Staff Development Successes
- Meeting Overview:
The Mora School Board meeting covered several topics including contractual deadlines, staff development successes, and student achievement goals. The board opted to proceed with the agenda as planned, despite a proposal to delay a critical agenda item related to superintendent contract negotiations due to concerns over meeting the November 1st deadline for notifications. Alongside this, the board heard in-depth reports on staff development initiatives and student achievement metrics, highlighting successes in professional training and literacy programs.
A prominent discussion during the meeting revolved around item 12G, which involved superintendent contract negotiations. A board member suggested tabling the item until the next meeting to ensure full board participation. This proposal sparked a debate over the consequences of delaying the decision, especially given the looming November 1st deadline for notifying the superintendent about contract negotiations. The legal ramifications of missing this deadline were a concern, leading to a detailed review of the contractual obligations. Despite these concerns, the board decided to proceed with the agenda as initially outlined, with one dissenting vote.
Another focal point of the meeting was the comprehensive presentation on staff development and professional training initiatives. The district places a strong emphasis on these programs, reserving at least 2% of basic revenue for staff development activities. An annual staff development report outlined various initiatives, including Epic PD, a collaborative professional development day involving multiple school districts. The staff development committee, which includes teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators, prioritizes diverse professional development opportunities, such as shorter sessions known as pocket PDs and more extensive workshops. The report emphasized the importance of aligning these activities with the district’s quality compensation plan and ensuring teachers fulfill the 125-hour professional development requirement for their five-year relicensure cycle.
Particular attention was given to reading instruction training, with two distinct programs in place. Twenty-two elementary teachers are completing year two of their letters training, while high school teachers, particularly those in special education, are engaging in OLA training. These programs are designed to enhance reading instruction and are accompanied by paraprofessional training to provide additional support. The professional development day on August 28th was highlighted, featuring a schedule with numerous hour-long sessions catering to the diverse needs of the teaching staff. Feedback from this day was collected through surveys, encouraging educators to reflect on the immediate benefits of the training for their students.
The board also discussed the progress and challenges related to student achievement goals. The comprehensive achievement and civics readiness plan was introduced, replacing the “world’s best workforce” program. This plan includes goals for student preparedness, achievement gap reduction, and overall graduation rates. The district has seen success in some areas, such as kindergarten readiness and reducing achievement gaps for students eligible for free and reduced lunch and American Indian students. However, the board acknowledged the complexities of setting and adjusting these goals, particularly for subgroups with smaller populations.
Additionally, the board reviewed the implementation of the Zello program, which assists high school students in identifying career interests, with a current completion rate of 84% among seniors. While there was discussion about increasing this target, the board decided to maintain the current goal, recognizing the challenges faced by students participating in off-campus programs. The district’s graduation rate goal aims to increase eligibility from 85.61% to 90% by Spring 2024, though the district’s current rate already surpasses the state average.
