- Meeting Overview:
At a recent Morris Plains Borough Council meeting, residents expressed concerns regarding traffic safety and the potential impact of a proposed McDonald’s drive-thru on Speedwell Avenue. This issue dominated discussions, with residents urging the council to consider the implications for community safety and traffic flow.
The proposal for a two-lane drive-thru at the prospective McDonald’s location sparked considerable debate. A resident, identified as Jessica, highlighted the potential risks associated with increased traffic. She recounted a personal incident involving her mother being hit in a crosswalk, underscoring the dangers faced by pedestrians, particularly during school hours. Jessica emphasized that the current traffic studies inadequately accounted for congestion during these peak times, which could worsen with the drive-thru’s addition.
Jessica’s concerns extended beyond traffic, touching on a community rat problem. She linked the issue to the proposed McDonald’s. Her comments were supported by a petition, signed by over 1,000 residents, opposing the drive-thru. Despite her efforts, a council member, while acknowledging traffic concerns, refrained from discussing specifics of the McDonald’s application due to legal advice. The council member noted that traffic was anticipated to increase regardless, due to a state mandate for affordable housing units.
Further complicating the discussion was a broader acknowledgment of Morris Plains’ traffic challenges. A council member expressed personal frustration with navigating congested intersections. However, the feasibility of such measures was questioned given resource limitations.
The meeting also addressed other community concerns. Another resident, Cathy, requested that Hillview and Rosale Avenues be added to an ordinance restricting truck traffic, citing fears of her neighborhood becoming a cut-through due to nearby developments. The council promised to forward her request to the traffic committee.
The issue of community safety was a recurring theme, with discussions on improving crosswalks and addressing rising crime rates. The council confirmed ongoing efforts to enhance crosswalk safety, including refreshing faded flags and increasing police enforcement.
Public safety was further highlighted in reports from the fire and police departments. The fire department noted an increase in calls and discussed plans for additional training and equipment upgrades. Meanwhile, the police department reported a notable rise in shoplifting, particularly in the Kohl’s Plaza area.
The meeting also touched on several community events and infrastructure projects. The annual Christmas tree and menorah lightings were scheduled, with police assistance for traffic control. The council approved new members for the fire department and recognized the efforts of the Department of Public Works in community maintenance and event support.
Infrastructure updates included progress on the Tab Road Route 53 Warehouse project and the award of a $174,000 grant for road construction on North View Drive. Acknowledgment was given to the grant writer for securing funds to support these initiatives.
