Morris Town Council Celebrates Police Achievements and Proclaims Cancer Awareness Months
- Meeting Overview:
The Morris Town Council meeting held on September 17, 2025, prominently featured the recognition of outstanding police work and proclamations for ovarian and prostate cancer awareness. The council celebrated the contributions of Detective Kevin Yarzab, named Officer of the Year, and acknowledged the efforts of Patrol Officers Marico and Miguel Picio for their excellence in DWI arrests. Additionally, the council highlighted the significance of cancer awareness and community engagement in the township.
The meeting commenced with accolades for the Morris Township Police Department. Detective Kevin Yarzab was honored as Officer of the Year for his exceptional dedication and contributions to the force. His noteworthy achievements included solving a complex investigation leading to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of a stolen BMW, as well as intercepting funds in a fraud case. Yarzab also spearheaded a sting operation that resulted in the apprehension of a suspect attempting to sexually assault a minor and played a role in addressing package thefts in the community. Chief Shear praised Yarzab’s consistent availability to assist fellow officers and his leadership in training the detective bureau.
Additionally, the council recognized Patrol Officers Marico and Miguel Picio for their outstanding performance in DWI arrests, which has placed Morris Township at the forefront of DWI enforcement in the county. Officer Marico made 20 arrests, while Officer Picio closely followed with 19. Chief Shear emphasized the critical role these officers play in maintaining road safety and preventing dangerous incidents.
In a ceremonial gesture, the meeting included the swearing-in of new officers. Deputy Mayor Jeffery R. Grayzel and another council member participated in a pinning ceremony for newly hired Patrol Officer Ryan Terrell and Patrol Officer Cory Russo.
The council meeting also addressed health awareness initiatives, with Mayor Donna J. Guariglia declaring September as ovarian cancer awareness month. The declaration highlighted significant statistics, noting that an estimated 20,890 women are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2025, with a mortality rate of 12,730. A representative named Rachel shared her notable personal experience as an ovarian cancer survivor and the loss of her friend to the disease. Her testimony emphasized the urgency for increased awareness and research funding to improve early detection and treatment outcomes. The council also proclaimed September as prostate cancer awareness month, recognizing the disease as the second most common cancer among men and urging residents to pursue regular screenings for early detection.
Public comments during the meeting included Lauren Miller’s concerns about the management of the township’s pickleball courts. Miller, a resident and pickleball player, voiced her frustrations over the lack of enforcement of badge checks and court usage rules, despite paying fees for badge access. She questioned the effectiveness of the current system, noting that her badge had only been checked once in three years. The council acknowledged her concerns and promised to follow up with the parks and recreation department regarding enforcement staff schedules. Miller also suggested exploring a swipe card system, similar to one used in another municipality, as a potential solution for managing court access.
The council meeting also included the introduction of two ordinances related to affordable and supportive housing initiatives. Ordinance 24-25, concerning the transfer of properties for affordable housing, and Ordinance 25-25, involving the reauthorization of a property sale for supportive housing, were moved for discussion. The council explained procedural changes necessitated by state funding requirements for the supportive housing ordinance.
Additionally, discussions touched on community events and initiatives. The Deputy Mayor announced upcoming events such as the township’s third annual Pridefest and the Trunk or Treat event, encouraging early registration. The council also mentioned ongoing utility work on Harter Road, expected to cause traffic disruptions for the next two months.
