- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Morris Town Council meeting, the council addressed the town’s affordable housing obligations, deliberated on several local development applications, and approved zoning variances.
The council focused on the state’s affordable housing requirements. The town is expected to accommodate approximately 570 affordable units, necessitating the development of around 2,800 market-rate units. This considerable demand will impact Morris Township’s future planning and development. The council plans to submit its housing unit calculations in January and engage in negotiations to finalize the numbers by June. Discussions recognized the challenge posed by these mandates, as they impose substantial development needs on the township and could alter the local landscape.
Additionally, the council reviewed and conditionally approved the application of Richard Landerman, who sought zoning variances to subdivide a property located on Woodland Drive. This decision allows for the development of new lots, provided they adhere to specific conditions, such as restrictions on short-term rentals and limitations on tree removal. The council emphasized maintaining the integrity of the neighborhood through these stipulations.
The meeting also approved a variance for John Saxon to convert part of an existing garage into office space on West Hanover Avenue, with conditions to prevent its use as living quarters. The council reinforced that the garage should not have a separate water or sewer connection from the main house.
Lastly, the council addressed a variance request from residents seeking to expand their home on Brid Drive. The application was approved, allowing for the addition of a second story over an existing garage, provided it did not alter the existing footprint of the property. The decision included a stipulation regarding the repositioning of a non-compliant shed if it were to be replaced.
