- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Mounds View School Board meeting, developments were discussed, including the implementation of new literacy programs, academic recognitions for district schools, and efforts to close achievement gaps and enhance diversity among educators. The board explored the adoption of a new reading screener and ongoing educational strategies to elevate student readiness and success.
A focal point of the meeting was the discussion on the implementation of a new literacy program and the adoption of the FastBridge reading screener. The decision to select the Core training program for teachers across various grades was influenced by feedback from a literacy specialist and aims to enhance early literacy and effective instruction. This initiative involves nine asynchronous training modules, supplemented by online interaction with facilitators and three live sessions. Teachers have completed the initial modules, focusing on early literacy and word structure, and have received positive feedback for their enthusiasm in advancing their teaching skills. Additionally, the transition to FastBridge was necessitated by state requirements, and a two-year plan is set for its implementation, with a train-the-trainer model to ensure effective use.
Superintendent Chris Lennox presented notable recognitions for district schools, including Chippewa Middle School being named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. This accolade joins Irondale High School and Pike Lake Elementary in receiving such honors. The Mounds View School District Orchestra Program also received the 2024 Meritorious Orchestra Program Award, highlighting its positive impact on the community.
The meeting further addressed the district’s focused efforts on closing achievement gaps and increasing diversity among educators. A key goal is to improve math proficiency rates for Hispanic and Black students, with targets set for 2026. New instructional resources like ST Math and Desmos have been introduced to aid in this endeavor. Concurrently, the district aims to increase the proportion of teachers of color to 6% by 2026, aligning more closely with the student population, which comprises 41% students of color. Initiatives such as “grow your own” programs are being implemented to foster a pipeline of diverse educators from within the community.
The board also discussed the College and Career Centers’ role in assisting students with post-secondary planning. A new software is being implemented to enhance four-year planning and career exploration. Graduation rates for the class of 2023 are projected to be 98%, with a focus on maintaining high rates across all student subgroups, including English learners and students receiving special education services.
In addition to academic and instructional updates, the board expressed appreciation for the community’s support, noting significant donations totaling $35,690 for school programs and food shelves. The board acknowledged the generosity of donors and the positive impact of these contributions on the district.
Student representatives from Mounds View and Irondale high schools shared updates on recent activities, including successful homecoming events and achievements by the Irondale marching band. Upcoming events such as choir concerts and a trunk or treat were also highlighted.
