Mounds View School Board Discusses Energy Efficiency Projects and New Assessment System
- Meeting Overview:
At the March 10th, 2026 meeting, the Mounds View School Board focused on substantial initiatives, including the implementation of a new district-wide assessment system and significant energy efficiency projects slated for the upcoming summer.
A central topic of discussion was the district’s transition to the Synergy student information system, which replaces an outdated data warehouse. This system offers centralized data and analytics, simplifying processes and improving data-driven decision-making. Presenters emphasized the system’s benefits, including comprehensive data reporting and assessments, which allow administrators, educators, and students to gain insights into student progress. The new system enables the creation of fifteen different types of questions, incorporating constructed responses and innovative ways for students to submit answers, such as voice recordings and drawings. Teachers expressed positive feedback, citing the system’s efficiency and user-friendliness. The real-time assessment feature, a key component, allows teachers to address student difficulties immediately, fostering timely instructional support.
Additionally, the district is undertaking a major LED lighting project, with an objective to convert all lighting systems to LED by the end of July. The project promises enhanced energy efficiency and cost savings. Snail Lake Education Center and Belair Elementary have already completed the transition, while Mounds View High School is halfway through. The brighter, more efficient lighting fixtures are anticipated to yield significant energy savings.
Summer 2026 will see several major projects, notably at Pinewood Elementary School. A geothermal project will overhaul the school’s heating and cooling systems, involving the replacement of domestic water lines, drilling for geothermal wells, and converting boilers from steam to hot water. These improvements aim to modernize the facility and enhance energy efficiency. The extensive work will temporarily relocate summer programs for Pinewood students to other district schools.
Mounds View High School will experience transformative changes within its science wing, converting two original classrooms into a modern learning environment. This renovation is scheduled to begin after the current school year and conclude before students return in the fall. Additionally, the high school’s baseball field will undergo turf installation to improve drainage and usability.
A newly established American Indian parent advisory council aims to deepen community involvement. Furthermore, ongoing efforts in career and technical education programs strive to increase industry-recognized credentials for students.
School Board members shared insights from recent community events, including Black History Month celebrations and winter music events at Irondale, reflecting on the vibrant cultural displays and student talents. They commended student initiatives supporting community members during challenging times.
