Mounds View School Board Highlights Q Comp Success and Celebrates Principal’s Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Mounds View School Board meeting brought key updates on the district’s Q Comp program, a performance-based compensation initiative, which has seen significant staff engagement and success. Additionally, the board celebrated the recognition of Mounds View High School Principal Rob Reetsz as High School Principal of the Year for the Minnesota Capital Division.
05:29The cornerstone of the meeting was the discussion around the Q Comp program, a pioneering initiative in performance-based compensation. Superintendent Chris Lennox detailed the program’s five integral components, which have been instrumental in enhancing school culture and student success. The first component, career advancement options, offers diverse leadership roles such as instructional leadership team members and content area specialists, providing opportunities for approximately 13% of the teaching staff to contribute in meaningful ways.
Job-embedded professional development, the second component, focuses on in-district training led by teachers for their peers. A standout example is the Teacher Development and Appraisal Process (TDAP), which employs collaborative learning and micro-teaching methods. These methods allow teachers to record lessons and engage in peer discussions, refining instructional strategies to enhance classroom effectiveness.
Teacher evaluation forms the third component, seamlessly integrated within the TDAP. It ties evaluation to teachers’ daily work, fostering both individual and collective growth. The alternative pay system under Q Comp, another essential aspect, incorporates stipends for teacher leaders as part of the broader salary schedule. Superintendent Lennox proudly reported a 99% success rate for both tenured and probationary staff in meeting the program’s requirements.
11:09In celebrating educational leadership, Superintendent Lennox took the opportunity to recognize Rob Reetsz, Mounds View High School’s principal, for being named High School Principal of the Year.
Further into the meeting, the board transitioned to discuss the district’s upcoming graduation ceremonies, set to honor students from various programs, including ALC, Irondale High School, Mounds View High School, and the adult basic education program.
13:08The meeting also covered the sale of certificates related to the acquisition of the Northeast Youth and Family Services Building, a resolution that passed unanimously following Superintendent Lennox’s detailed explanation of the funding mechanism. This purchase is expected to enhance the district’s ability to serve the community effectively.
14:46An enrollment and class size update for the 2025-26 school year provided insights into the district’s student population. As of late May, enrollment figures stood at 11,453 K-12 students, surpassing projections by 370. The district’s strategy to accept non-resident students in grades 1 through 5 has been key in maintaining these numbers. However, the fluid nature of enrollment demands ongoing monitoring to ensure class sizes remain within board-approved limits.
19:54Looking forward, the board reviewed the district’s operational plan for 2024-25, with Superintendent Lennox outlining three priority goals among the district’s seven strategic objectives. These goals include early childhood and kindergarten outreach, the implementation of technology audit recommendations, and adherence to Reed Act requirements.
The early childhood outreach initiatives have been particularly proactive, with the district employing various communication strategies, such as kindergarten videos, targeted mailings, and a digital campaign, which collectively aim to boost enrollment and ensure student readiness.
In addressing technology needs, the district has developed a comprehensive three-year plan incorporating recommendations from recent audits. This plan aims to advance educational technology, operational support, and cybersecurity.
The Reed Act requirements have necessitated extensive training for K-5 teachers and relevant staff, with the adoption of new literacy resources planned for the near future.
31:45Finally, the board received updates on legislative progress from the Association of Metropolitan School Districts. Board members shared their involvement in community events, expressing gratitude for the district staff’s dedication throughout the school year.
