- Meeting Overview:
The Mount Greylock Regional School Committee meeting on November 14, 2024, brought changes in leadership, including the election of Julia Bowen as the new chair. The meeting also celebrated Christina Conry’s receipt of the Division 6 All-State School Committee Award for her leadership during challenging times and addressed several issues like the progress of the field and track project, budget priorities, and initiatives to improve literacy and technology integration in the district.
One of the meeting’s focal points was the leadership transition within the school committee. Christina Conry was honored with the Division 6 All-State School Committee Award, recognizing her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and her adept handling of budget constraints and superintendent transitions. The award underscored Conry’s ability to maintain effective operations amid complex challenges. Following the award presentation, the committee proceeded with its reorganization, electing Julia Bowen as the new chair. Conry stepped down from the chair position but was subsequently elected vice chair. Steven Miller was appointed as the committee’s secretary.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the nearing completion of the district’s field and track project. The business administrator reported that the facility is in excellent condition, with excitement brewing among the track and field team and other athletic groups. A punch list of remaining tasks is being addressed, some of which will extend into the spring due to the growth cycle of grass. Plans for a grand opening event in the spring were also discussed, with the possibility of games being held at the end of the current season if conditions allow. Discussions included potential landscaping improvements, such as planting shade trees and incorporating memorials to enhance the facility’s cultural significance.
Budget priorities for fiscal year 2026 were another key topic. The administrator outlined upcoming discussions focused on resource needs, including staffing levels and student enrollment projections. A district-wide team is working on enhancing literacy instruction from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, with investments already made in special education resources. The administrator emphasized the importance of maintaining existing facilities to avoid deferred maintenance costs, given the age of the district’s elementary school buildings.
The committee also addressed the procurement of essential maintenance equipment for Williamstown Elementary School. The proposed purchase included a commercial carpet cleaning machine and a CT71 cleaning device, estimated at a total of $117,000, funded by a gift from Williams College. This equipment aims to improve maintenance standards and extend the lifespan of the school’s aging floors. The urgency of acquiring this equipment was highlighted, especially with the winter season approaching.
In academic and curriculum developments, the meeting discussed initiatives aimed at improving literacy instruction across the district. A district-wide team has been formed to develop a plan for enhancing literacy from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. This plan, expected to be finalized in the spring, is part of a nearly two-year effort involving key positions such as the director of curriculum and instruction and reading specialists. The district is also field-testing a new math curriculum at the elementary level and expanding benchmark assessments to middle and high schools.
Technology integration and digital wellness were key discussion points, with the district evaluating its technology tools and implementing security upgrades. The superintendent emphasized the importance of embracing artificial intelligence in educational practices and improving community engagement through digital wellness programming. Despite challenges in attendance at community events, efforts are underway to enhance outreach to families.
Enrollment trends were also discussed, with an emphasis on understanding the factors driving these trends. The superintendent noted that kindergarten enrollment closely aligns with birth records in the district, challenging previous assumptions about employment opportunities being the primary driver. The committee explored potential demographic shifts between member towns and their implications for the district’s strategic planning.
Lastly, the committee addressed ongoing efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism and improve communication within the district. Plans to enhance two-way communication between the district and its stakeholders were discussed, with proposals including the hiring of an outside consultant to improve communication strategies and website usability. The importance of transparency in budget discussions was also stressed, with suggestions for sharing potential budget impacts with finance committees.
