Mount Olive School Board Discusses Bullying Measures and Transparency During Engaging Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Mount Olive School Board meeting tackled issues, including initiatives to combat bullying, the importance of transparency in district operations, and the recognition of student achievements. Key discussions revolved around the implementation of positive behavior support systems, the handling of Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) cases, and community concerns regarding transparency and information access.
The meeting placed substantial emphasis on efforts to address bullying and promote a positive school environment. Jackie Bellow, the director of student support services, presented the annual report on the student safety data system (SSDS), which tracks incidents of violence, vandalism, weapons, substance abuse, and harassment, intimidation, and bullying. While there was a high number of HIB investigations, the confirmed incidents showed a slight decline from the previous year. Bellow detailed various programs aimed at reducing these incidents, such as kindness ambassador programs, character education, and anti-bullying assemblies. Weekly wellness meetings were also highlighted as a method for addressing student struggles and ongoing cases.
The board discussed the importance of training staff on the HIB policy and shared insights from a recent social media use night led by David Nash. The event provided parents with valuable information based on current research and training. Feedback from Nash was described as constructive.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on transparency and communication within the district. During public comments, community member Tim Capone raised questions about the HIB reporting process, specifically concerning the implications of choosing not to investigate reported incidents. Capone’s concerns were supported by another community member, Amy, who emphasized the need for clarity on how uninvestigated reports are handled. Board members clarified that all reports of harassment, intimidation, or bullying are investigated, regardless of the outcome, and appropriate measures, including counseling, are taken even for unsubstantiated incidents.
Capone also voiced concerns about the board’s decision to appeal a HIP decision involving a student, questioning the transparency of the process. He inquired about budget information accessibility and challenged the confidentiality of teacher schedules under FERPA regulations. Capone argued that public interest should outweigh confidentiality claims and expressed skepticism about the district’s transparency practices. Although the board did not engage in a back-and-forth conversation with Capone, they acknowledged his intention to continue raising these issues in future meetings.
Student achievements were also celebrated during the meeting. The student liaison reported commendations for five students in the National Merit Scholarship Program and highlighted the success of various events, such as the National English Honor Society and math honor society induction ceremonies. The Robotics team hosted a successful Lego League qualifier and planned to host the state championships. Additionally, the Air Force Junior ROTC drill team achieved notable placements in a recent competition, and several winter sports were set to begin post-Thanksgiving break.
