- Meeting Overview:
The recent Mountainside School Board meeting focused on student performance assessments, new educational initiatives, and community engagement efforts. Adjustmentsttention was given to the district’s performance in standardized tests, particularly in mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA), as well as ongoing efforts to enhance educational practices and community involvement.
A central topic of discussion was the presentation of the district’s annual state test results, specifically the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) and Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) assessments. The report highlighted that third-grade students achieved a 78% rate of meeting or exceeding expectations in math, outperforming both the District Factor Group (DFG) and state averages. This trend of exceeding averages was consistent across fourth and fifth grades. However, an area of concern was identified in seventh-grade math, where 62% of students met or exceeded expectations. This cohort included students taking Algebra 1, which may have impacted the overall performance metrics. In contrast, all students taking Geometry met or exceeded expectations.
The board also addressed the performance in third grade ELA, where only 62% of students met or exceeded expectations, slightly below the DFG average of 64%. This sparked concerns about the reliability of the test and its implications. The drop in comprehension scores, particularly in fictional texts, prompted a call for further examination of instructional strategies. While the third-grade scores raised concerns, other grades demonstrated strong performance, with eighth-grade ELA scores reaching 91%, above the state average.
During the meeting, the introduction of new educational assessments and instructional practices was discussed. The board plans to implement linkit science assessments, aligning with New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA), to address climate change curriculum requirements. The Dynamic Learning Map (DLM) assessments, designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities, were also highlighted.
An important aspect of the meeting was the superintendent’s report on community engagement initiatives, particularly concerning a public question to be presented to the community. The superintendent noted an increase in attendance at public sessions, with plans to engage further through a session at Borough Hall. Parents were promoting the public question via social media. Additionally, various awareness weeks were discussed, with the PTO organizing events to promote anti-bullying messages and the importance of respectful interactions.
The board also reviewed the district’s collaboration with Berkeley Heights, particularly in terms of shared curricular development for math programs. The alignment of algebra and geometry curricula was emphasized.
In the realm of science education, the board expressed disappointment with state averages, which were lower than those for ELA. Fifth-grade science scores dropped from 60% to 42%, while eighth-grade scores improved slightly. These results highlighted challenges posed by the state’s testing methodology and the need for a more robust science curriculum.
The meeting concluded with updates on Berkeley Heights meetings and the introduction of new personnel, including a new athletics director and the extension of the acting superintendent’s role. The PTO announced an upcoming “trunk or treat” event, inviting community participation.
