Mullica School Board Faces Budget Constraints Amid State Funding Cuts
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Mullica School Board meeting focused on several issues, with the most pressing being a report on the school’s financial status following a decrease in state funding. The board discussed the implications of a $600,000 reduction in state aid, which has led to a tighter budget and a decrease in available reserves, affecting the school’s financial planning for the coming year.
The audit report presented at the meeting highlighted that the cut in state funding has critically impacted the school’s fund balance. The reduction in state aid resulted in a $200,000 decrease in the maintenance reserve and a $150,000 drop in the excess surplus, which is typically used to offset tax increases. The current balance now stands at $768,000. The implications for future budgets were emphasized, with board members recognizing the need for cautious fiscal management in the years ahead.
Beyond financial concerns, the meeting featured numerous recognitions and community initiatives. The superintendent introduced several honorees for their contributions to the school and community. Among those recognized was Jean Gallagher, a teacher praised for her respectful treatment of students and efforts to create a collaborative learning environment. Additionally, Mallerie was acknowledged for her dedication in various roles, particularly in providing counseling to students and supporting them during lunch and recess. Applause followed each recognition.
Kristen Hol was celebrated as the middle school’s educator of the year, recognized for her ability to reach challenging learners and her involvement in student development both academically and emotionally. Her support for fellow educators was also noted. The facilities supervisor, Henry Lazada, was commended for his contributions to maintaining a clean and safe environment, with improvements in the school’s cleanliness and safety attributed to his efforts.
Retirements were also acknowledged, with Charmaine Gallagher and Mrs. Paulini recognized for their long-term service and dedication to the school community. Their contributions to school safety and student care were deeply appreciated, and their absence will be felt by colleagues and students alike.
In addition to these recognitions, the board discussed achievements within the special education department. A supervisor presented on community-based instruction trips that provided students with practical life skills. Notably, middle school students visited a Target store to purchase essential items, learning important life skills in the process. Teachers and related service providers, including occupational and speech therapists, supported this initiative, offering a comprehensive learning experience.
A separate educational trip to Donado was highlighted, where preschool students engaged with a unit on lights and enjoyed a train ride and meeting Santa Claus. Funded through donations, this trip was praised for its positive impact, with educators noting the students’ behavior and the professionalism of the accompanying adults.
The meeting also spotlighted a diabetes awareness initiative spearheaded by the Silip family. Their advocacy led to professional development sessions for staff on diabetes education, emphasizing the importance of recognizing diabetes signs and managing emergencies. A fundraising effort resulted in $2,516.51 raised for Breakthrough T1D.
Committee reports provided updates on various topics, including HVAC system improvements and ongoing personnel negotiations. The PTA expressed gratitude for volunteer support in recent events and announced new leadership roles, while planning for a major fundraiser in April 2025.
