- Meeting Overview:
During a recent New Brunswick School Board meeting, the Board Superintendent, Dr. Aubrey A. Johnson, reported on various school statistics and highlighted the district’s partnership with local organizations for vaccine administration. Edward Spencer’s facilities committee report emphasized the high school gym addition and media center renovations, while Ivan Adorno’s athletic committee report marked the winter sports season’s commencement. Dr. Dale Caldwell, from the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey, spotlighted the commission’s successful aid to students with special needs.
Dr. Johnson’s report began with the district’s statistics – covering enrollment, cases of harassment, intimidation, and bullying, staff and student attendance, and positive COVID-19 cases. In addition, Dr. Johnson emphasized the district’s efforts to combat the ongoing pandemic. In collaboration with the New Jersey Black Women Physician Association and New Brunswick Tomorrow, the district is administering flu and COVID-19 vaccines.
The meeting also delved into the district’s facility updates. Edward Spencer, presenting the facilities committee report, illuminated the progress on the high school gym addition and media center renovations.
On the athletics front, Ivan Adorno reported on the start of the winter sports season, which features basketball, track, cheerleading, and wrestling.
Highlighting the district’s focus on special education, Dr. Dale Caldwell shared the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey’s success in serving students with special needs. Dr. Caldwell noted the commission’s growing reputation, attracting interest from national and international entities due to the high level of care and respect provided to special needs students.
Public comments during the meeting brought up concerns about collaborating with Rutgers University, the long-term facilities report regarding Lincoln School, and the status of substitute teachers starting without board approval. Board members clarified that Lincoln School’s replacement was included in the long-term facilities plan but wasn’t a current priority. Superintendent Johnson explained the need for flexibility in hiring substitute teachers pending board approval, especially in situations requiring immediate staffing.
Despite the array of topics discussed, the meeting maintained a festive atmosphere, beginning with a Black Salute and featuring a performance by the New Brunswick High School choir.
Toward the end of the meeting, the board moved into a closed session to discuss personnel matters and attorney-client privilege.
