New Milford Borough Council Approves Electric Vehicle Charging Stations and Additional Infrastructure Funding
- Meeting Overview:
The recent New Milford Borough Council meeting focused on infrastructure improvements, including the authorization of electric vehicle charging stations at key public locations and increased funding for the Main Street Improvements Project.
One of the most notable developments from the council meeting was the adoption of an ordinance granting easements to Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) for the installation of electric vehicle charging stations. These stations are to be located at the borough hall and public library. The ordinance received unanimous approval from the council following a public hearing, during which no comments were made by residents.
Additionally, the council adopted a second ordinance appropriating an extra $80,000 to the Main Street Improvements Project, with the allocation to be financed through bond issuance. Like the ordinance for the charging stations, this measure also passed without public opposition during its hearing.
In new business, the council introduced an ordinance proposing a redevelopment plan for specific properties on River Road, which will be reviewed by the planning board. A public hearing for this ordinance is scheduled for the end of July. Another ordinance introduced aims to allocate $13,000 from the capital improvement fund for replacing a fire horn at Fire Company Number One, with its public hearing also planned for July.
The meeting also highlighted upcoming community events, such as a historical walking tour, a Star Spangled Spectacular at Overpeck Park, and a vintage baseball event. The annual National Night Out, featuring fireworks, is scheduled for early August at Kennedy Field. The council president expressed gratitude for the support received concerning the installation of the new fire horn.
Reports from council members provided insights into various initiatives and activities. Councilwoman Grant highlighted the arts committee’s efforts and addressed concerns over the Phoenix Library’s impending closure, which will affect library hours and eliminate Sunday openings. Councilman Seymour commended the municipal lines for their contributions to a recent mental health awareness symposium.
The council also discussed environmental initiatives, including the Shade Tree Commission’s acquisition of 100 trees from the Department of Public Works for distribution during National Night Out. This effort aims to encourage private property planting, with vouchers available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Environmental Commission announced a collaboration with Sprout Farms to develop a site plan for a native plant garden, a milestone in a four-year project.
In acknowledgment of local achievements, congratulations were extended to students advancing to new schools and high school graduates, notably two enrollees at West Point. The flood mitigation committee’s efforts to raise awareness about resources for residents in flood zones, especially newcomers, were also noted.
The mayor provided an overview of the municipal budget, emphasizing challenges in balancing rising expenses with fiscal responsibility. Amid increased costs for salaries, pensions, and health insurance, the budget committee has implemented cuts across various departments to maintain financial stability. The meeting concluded with a public comment session, during which a resident expressed appreciation for the council and community’s friendliness.
