- Meeting Overview:
At the recent New Milford Borough Council meeting, the spotlight was on Cross Companies’ revised development concept for the property at 810 to 820 River Road. The council members engaged in a thorough discussion of the proposed changes to the plan, which now includes a reduction in total density from 180 to 160 units and the addition of affordable age-restricted housing. The presentation also covered alterations to the building structure, apartment sizes, parking availability, rental rates, and amenities such as a rooftop garden and interior courtyard.
The development proposal commanded considerable attention due to its potential impact on the community. The revised plan presented by Cross Companies aims to address previous concerns by lowering the number of units and integrating affordable housing for older residents. The amenities detailed, including communal spaces, were designed to enhance the living experience for future residents. However, council members had key questions about the project’s entrance locations, traffic flow, and public safety measures. The debate extended to the placement of affordable housing within the complex and the design of the commercial spaces included in the development. The next step for the development is a study by the planning board to determine if the site should be declared an area in need of redevelopment. This process involves multiple stages, including the creation of a redevelopment plan, site plan approval, and the preparation of construction drawings.
Another topic addressed at the meeting was a public safety concern raised by a citizen named Connie Vaso. Vaso expressed frustration with the rejection of her fence installation application, citing safety concerns due to the location of her property. In response, the council suggested that her options were to appeal to the zoning board or wait for a possible amendment to the existing regulations.
The council also highlighted the achievements of the 2024 Little League Spring Champions, who were recognized for their accomplishment.
On the operational side, the fire department reported a significant rise in activities, including mutual aid calls and house fires. The department’s receipt of a federal grant for new turnout gear and equipment maintenance was a critical boost to their operations.
Council activities extended to community events and initiatives. Efforts to recruit new members for the beautification committee demonstrated ongoing work to improve the borough’s visual appeal.
