New Milford Fifth Graders Honored in Moving Up Ceremony Celebrating Achievements and Community Support
- Meeting Overview:
The recent New Milford School Board meeting was highlighted by a fifth-grade moving up ceremony, where students were celebrated for their achievements, creativity, and readiness for middle school. Acknowledgments were made to the community, educators, and parents for their vital roles in the students’ development. The ceremony also honored individual students with awards for leadership, artistic talent, and dedication to school safety.
The ceremony commenced with the superintendent expressing gratitude towards the community’s support in shaping the students’ educational journey.
The event was distinguished from traditional graduations, as it marked a compulsory transition rather than an optional milestone. The superintendent described the ceremony as a moment for reflection on the students’ growth from “knee high and couldn’t even tie their shoes” to being prepared for the new challenges of middle school. He encouraged the students to focus on academics and behavior, urging them to “work hard” and “do right by people.”
In a similar vein, another speaker urged the students to appreciate their educational opportunities, highlighting the injustices faced by many children worldwide who lack access to learning. The message was one of encouragement, emphasizing the importance of not taking education for granted and remaining committed to personal growth.
Musical achievements were recognized by the music instructor, who introduced the band and string orchestra members. These students, who practiced diligently throughout the year, were acknowledged for their successful performances. The choir teacher also celebrated the fifth graders’ dedication to mastering diverse musical pieces, encouraging them to carry their passion for music into their future education.
Memorable experiences from kindergarten through second grade were shared by the fifth graders, who recounted unique experiences such as learning remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, observing caterpillars transform into butterflies, and participating in art shows. Miss Andrews celebrated the creativity and curiosity of the fifth-grade REACH students, who explored various subjects, including aviation engineering and forensic science.
The ceremony also highlighted the achievements of the Berkeley Street student council, recognized for their leadership, and the Spirit Club, known for its initiatives promoting school spirit and community service. The fifth-grade safety patrol members were acknowledged for their dedication to maintaining a safe environment, serving as role models for their peers.
As the event progressed, individual students were honored with awards for their achievements. The Berkeley Pride and Spirit Award was presented to Logan Jagger Condan. Kayen New received the Artist of the Year award for outstanding creativity, while Alvin Thomas was named Musician of the Year for his talent and dedication. Luna Gerald was recognized as the Spanish Student of the Year for her enthusiasm and cultural contributions.
The Most Improved Student Award, presented by a representative from the Junior Women’s Club, went to Selma Henriquez, while the Principal’s Award was bestowed upon Ember Kim and Dylan Leto for their exemplary qualities of kindness, integrity, and leadership.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of promotion certificates to students from various classes. The event ended with a performance of the Berkeley School song, celebrating the collective experiences and memories of the students.
