- Meeting Overview:
The New Milford School Board addressed issues surrounding harassment, special education, and cafeteria balances during its recent meeting. The board also discussed the implementation of the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA) and the high impact tutoring grant program. Notably, the Acting Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction reported on alleged cases of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) within the district, as well as the recognition of Special Education Week.
During the meeting, the topic of HIB took a central stage as reports of alleged incidents were presented. The Acting Superintendent and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction provided details on HIB grades, suspension reports, and kindergarten screenings. Additionally, they celebrated student achievements across the district and highlighted the upcoming special education week, acknowledging the contributions of special education teachers.
Student achievements were further recognized in reports from the Office of Athletics, which included mention of workshops on mental health and sports, awards, and the successes of student athletes and staff. Among these achievements, the acknowledgment of the NJSIAA Scholar Athlete and the varsity athletic dinner announcement were notable.
Another point of discussion was the update on the high impact tutoring Grant. The board examined the challenges encountered while implementing the program and approved additional staff members to provide tutoring services within the district. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance educational support for students requiring extra assistance.
The school board also focused on the creation of a graduate profile for New Milford High School. The process involved distributing a survey to collect diverse perspectives from the community, with a follow-up meeting planned to analyze the survey results. This initiative aims to define the aspirations and competencies that the district hopes its graduates will achieve.
Facilities and finance topics were not overlooked. The board discussed various initiatives related to infrastructure, including roofing projects and bus maintenance. Additionally, the administration provided updates on cafeteria offerings and planning for the extended school year.
One of the challenges discussed was the issue of outstanding cafeteria balances. The board deliberated on the difficulties in addressing these balances.
The meeting also included the administration’s report on the successful implementation of the NJSLA, which was conducted without significant technical issues. This assessment is a componet of the state’s efforts to evaluate student learning and academic progress.
As the meeting progressed, the student board representative shared plans for the annual student “Olympics,” which are intended to engage a wider array of student interests by incorporating intellectual challenges alongside physical activities.
Throughout the gathering, the board approved multiple motions related to educational programs, personnel recommendations, and policy resolutions. Moments of debate and discussion punctuated the meeting, especially concerning the ongoing challenge of cafeteria balances and how to effectively address this issue.
