New Police Officers Sworn In and Lupus Awareness Highlighted at West Orange Town Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent West Orange Town Council meeting, four new police officers were sworn in. This event was complemented by a comprehensive presentation on lupus awareness. The meeting also addressed various community issues, including a proposed rainbow crosswalk, ongoing traffic safety concerns, and the introduction of new ordinances.
The swearing-in ceremony for Lily Valrose, Brandon Vargas, Anthony Shiata, and Alyssa Serranos was a notable highlight of the meeting. In the presence of Mayor Susan McCartney and Police Chief Matthew Fula, the new officers took their oaths to uphold the Constitution and perform their duties impartially. The ceremony concluded with a photo opportunity, capturing the moment of their entry into service.
Following the swearing-in, the meeting shifted to a presentation on lupus awareness, aligning with May being Lupus Awareness Month. Mon’nique Gore Massie, a health department member and lupus advocate, shared insights into the challenges faced by individuals living with lupus, an autoimmune disease affecting over 5 million people globally. Monique detailed the unpredictability of lupus, the lack of funding for research, and the common misdiagnoses due to limited physician awareness. She emphasized the need for increased public and private sector support for research and education, sharing her personal journey with the disease and advocating for comprehensive care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of lupus patients.
The council formally proclaimed May as Lupus Awareness Month, supporting Monique’s call for better access to treatment and resources. Her presentation highlighted the importance of community understanding and the role of advocacy groups like the Lupus Foundation of America in providing support to those affected by lupus.
The meeting continued with a discussion on the installation of a rainbow crosswalk, proposed as a symbol of inclusion and belonging for the LGBTQ community. Advocates emphasized the significance of such symbols, particularly in light of recent national challenges to LGBTQ rights. They noted the removal of rainbow-painted steps at town hall, which had sparked community concern, and called for local government leadership in affirming LGBTQ visibility. The council acknowledged these concerns and expressed interest in exploring the possibility of installing a rainbow crosswalk in collaboration with the county.
Traffic safety was another topic, particularly concerning the intersection near Gregory and Mitchell streets. Residents voiced frustrations over dangerous driving behaviors and the need for safety improvements. While the police have been providing visibility in the area, calls for more immediate action, such as funding safety lights through the Board of Education, were made. A traffic study is underway, but grant funding is not expected soon enough to address immediate concerns. The Chief of Police acknowledged the limitations in resources and enforcement capabilities, emphasizing the ongoing challenge of managing traffic safety across the township.
In terms of local development, discussions on the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreements were brought up, with residents expressing the need for transparency and questioning why certain projects bypass the conventional zoning process. Concerns were raised about the long-term impact of these agreements on the town’s tax base and the importance of maintaining commercial spaces that do not burden the school system.
The council also introduced several ordinances, including amendments to cannabis licenses, municipal court judge positions, and traffic stop intersections. A redevelopment plan for a property on Main Street was tabled for further discussion. These legislative efforts reflect the council’s ongoing initiatives to address community needs and enhance governance practices.
