- Meeting Overview:
The Kenilworth School Board meeting spotlighted the introduction of Mr. John Pillo as the new principal at Bryley, alongside discussions on academic achievements, construction project updates, and policy changes. Superintendent Kyle C. Arlington praised Miss Pavlech for her interim leadership at Bryley, particularly for her initiative allowing eighth graders to experience high school electives, which has been instrumental in retaining top talent within the district.
This is part of a broader initiative to integrate sixth graders into Bryley while sustaining academic achievement. The superintendent emphasized these goals as central to the district’s vision and mission statements, which were formally approved during the meeting.
The meeting also featured a discussion on the New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJ SLA) scores from spring 2024. The assessments covered English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. A presentation highlighted that while grades seven through nine remained stable in ELA, grades five and six outperformed state averages. However, challenges persist, particularly for English Language Learners (ELLs) in science, attributed to the precise language required. Steps are being taken to provide targeted support, including using tools like Google Translate.
In mathematics, consistency was observed in grades three to five, with notable improvements in grades six to eight. Efforts are underway to align the ELA curriculum more closely with state standards, focusing on writing instruction, as writing scores lagged behind reading. For mathematics, new pilot programs for grades K-2 are being explored to enhance foundational skills, addressing gaps in the current curriculum.
Attention then shifted to referendum updates on construction projects. Progress on HVAC work and field improvements was noted, with projects nearing completion. Despite delays in steel delivery, advancements have been made in areas like the auditorium and lobby. The report detailed the completion of several significant milestones, including underground utilities for a middle school addition and ongoing grading and sidewalk installation.
Questions arose regarding the regrading of the softball field and the removal of a dying tree on school property, necessary for safety. It was highlighted that the HVAC project had not incurred any change orders, an impressive feat for such a large-scale initiative.
The meeting also addressed financial and policy matters. Resolution 16 approved a corrective action plan for excess cash in the school cafeteria account, allocating funds for necessary equipment purchases for the Middle School kitchen. Concurrently, Resolution 18 involved rescinding and re-approving parts of a prior resolution concerning vacation and compensatory leave for certain employees upon retirement, as requested by the Kenilworth Education Association (KEA).
Policy updates included mandates for all students and staff to participate in fire and security drills and the handling of students convicted of firearm possession on school grounds. Additionally, the meeting discussed the coordination of nonpublic security aid for St. Teresa’s.
